Nevada Politician Garners National Attention with Controversial TV Ad (ContributorNetwork)

Nevada Sen. Mark Amodei wasted no time this week in making a big splash with his first campaign TV commercial in his bid to fill the seat of Dean Heller. Heller left his U.S. House of Representatives position when Nevada Republican leaders tabbed him to run for Sen. John Ensign's vacated seat after he stepped down following an affair and cover-up that ruined his career.

Amodei gathered 221 of 323 votes in a special election process that excluded the general public from choosing a candidate. Sharon Angle was one of many possible candidates who challenged the process that involved the GOP Central Committee.

The Nevada Supreme Court is considering the merits of a lawsuit that states anyone who filed for the race should be allowed in the contest. The ruling is expected in the next few weeks.

Amodei's commercial, considered racist by some for its caricatures of the Chinese people, is also considered thought-provoking by others for what the ad says about the mounting debt crisis in the United States.

Amodei's commercial, posted on the front page of his website, Amodei4Nevada, as a pop up advertisement, shows the Chinese marching on Washington while a news anchor says:

"Once upon a time, America became its own worst enemy . When all its borrowed money ran out, they kept spending. Out of control, their President Obama just kept raising the debt limit, and their independence became a new dependence. As their debt grew, our fortune grew. And that's how our great empire rose again."

Amodei is using the commercial to gather more donations. Under the commercial, posted on his website, a banner asks visitors to click the button stating, "Donate here to run this ad."

The commercial has done its job if notoriety is what Amodei is looking for. It saw air time on right-wing and left-wing websites as well as right-wing and left-wing national television news networks. The Huffington Post took a statement on Amodei's commercial from Rep. Judy Chu (D-Calif.). Chu condemned Amodei's ad but noted that he is, unfortunately, "far from the only candidate to play up fears of China's economic power."

Amodei has long been involved in state politics as the former president of the Nevada Mining Association and later as an assemblyman in 1996 and state senator in 2002. Amodei left office once he reached his term limit.

The former chairman of the Nevada Republican Party will run against Nevada State Treasurer Kate Marshall. Marshall has come under fire from the GOP in recent months for what they consider questionable decisions with taxpayer money. Marshall announced her run for Heller's seat on May 4 and, despite her head start, Amodei has already generated more publicity in a few days than she has in more than a month and a half.

The seat the two candidates are running for is in a rural district that has been a Republican stronghold in the past. In the 2008 presidential election, Barack Obama carried the district: a fact that is not looked upon lightly by the Republicans heading into this election.
