Cox, Haradon pitch in for Brewer softball team ? Maine Sports ...

BREWER, Maine ? Emily Cox was locked in right from the start Saturday, as the Brewer High senior left-hander didn?t give up a hit in six innings to lead the Witches to a 2-0 Eastern Maine Class A softball quarterfinal victory over Skowhegan at Coffin Field.

Top-ranked Brewer (17-1) will take on Messalonskee of Oakland in Wednesday?s 7 p.m. regional championship game in Augusta.

No. 4 Skowhegan finishes the season 11-7.

Messalonskee defeated Cony 6-1 in the day?s other semifinal.

Cox recorded eight strikeouts and five walks in her six innings, and right-hander Morgan Haradon worked around a single and an error in the seventh to nail down the save.

Coach Skip Estes? Witches had plenty of chances throughout the game, stranding six runners through the first four innings, with the best chance coming in the third.

In that inning, Cox led off with a single and courtesy runner Hannah Simmons wound up on third thanks to a ground-out and passed ball, and Sarah Babin was plunked with a pitch to put runners on first and third.

Deaven Smith then laid a bunt down the third-base line, and Skowhegan third baseman Shelby Obert faked a throw to first and caught Simmons straying too far off third. She was gunned down trying to get back to the bag.

Brewer finally broke through with a one-out rally in the fifth as Babin laced a double to right-center and scored on Smith?s opposite-field base hit to right.

The play at the plate was a close one, but the ball skipped away from Indians? catcher Anna Lorrette, which allowed Smith, who had gone to second on the throw from the outfield, to take third.

Four pitches later, Amy Curry grounded a single through the shortstop hole to score Smith.

Despite the five walks, Cox relied on a buckling changeup to keep the Indians off-balance, and Skowhegan never got a runner past second base.

The Indians? lone base hit came off Kady Esty?s bat, as she lined a single just over the outstretched glove of Babin in the seventh, and Mikayla Fitzmaurice reached on an error.

But Haradon struck out the final two batters to end the game.
