Home Minister Chidambaram offers to resign - TV (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? Several TV channels said Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram offered to resign on Monday, days after a document emerged suggesting he failed to stop the multi-billion dollar telecoms scam that has rocked the government.

The scandal over the sale of 2G telecoms licences at rock bottom prices in 2007 when Chidambaram was finance minister has damaged the government's credibility and already landed one former minister and company executives in jail.

Chidambaram told Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi he wanted to resign to avoid embarrassing the party, CNN-IBN reported, citing unnamed sources.

Congress spokesmen declined to comment when reporters asked about the reports of a resignation offer during a news conference.

An analyst said Gandhi was unlikely to accept Chidambaram's offer because it would be seen as admitting the government erred in the telecoms deal.

He has offered to step down over other issues in the past.

A finance ministry memo made public last week implied Chidambaram failed to rectify the underpriced sale of telecoms licences that lost the treasury up to $39 billion.

Former telecommunications minister Andimuthu Raja was arrested and imprisoned in February in connection with the telecom scandal, one of a string of corruption allegations involving the Congress party-led government.

Raja denies any wrongdoing.

The memo, written by the finance ministry and sent to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh this year, suggests Chidambaram in 2008 chose not to revise the underpriced telecoms deals despite recommendations from other officials to do so.

The note was approved by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, considered by many to be a rival to Chidambaram in the cabinet.

It was presented to the Supreme Court by an opposition politician who wants Chidambaram to stand trial for the scam. Analysts are divided about the significance of the memo and whether it is admissible as evidence.

Mukherjee on Monday said Chidambaram was a valued colleague, as he entered a meeting with Gandhi about the memo, TV channels reported.

Merkel: Europe's rescue fund needs to be expanded (AP)

BERLIN ? German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday that she would not rule out letting a eurozone country default on its debts once the currency union has its permanent rescue fund in place.

In an hour-long interview with ARD television, Merkel underlined the importance of an expanded mechanism to prevent future crises, such as that in Greece, from spilling over into other nations.

The German parliament is set to vote Thursday on expanding the powers of the European Financial Stability Facility to allow it to buy government bonds, help bail out banks and quickly loan money to troubled countries.

Merkel said that once the EFSF's permanent successor, the European Stability Mechanism, is in place, "I don't exclude that we at some point ... that one could do the insolvency of a state just as of banks." The ESM is currently slated to start in 2013.

The chancellor also said a permanent structure would allow other European partners to set up a "barrier" around Greece to prevent a domino-effect on other nations.

Merkel underlined her argument for making changes to European regulations in order to allow for an "ability to intervene" to discipline member nations that fail to stick to the regulations set up to govern the common currency.

"We must only take steps that we can truly control," Merkel said.

Merkel expressed confidence that her governing coalition would be able to pass the expanded rescue fund.

"I would like to have a majority and I am confident that I will get it," Merkel said.

Opposition parties have said they would support the expanded rescue fund, ensuring its passage despite dissent from coalition members who have threatened to withhold their support.

What do you say about dying?? Holding a hand that is already like a skeleton with skin stretched over it?? Standing in back of his lounge chair and putting your hands gently on his shoulders for fear of hurting him?? Kissing the top of his head where only a few strands of those once thick curls remain?? Saying, ?I love you.? trying to make up for all those times you did not say it before?

On the night before our son, Mac, died, Jacob stopped by his daddy?s chair on his way to bed and said, ?Goodnight, Dad? Mac answered ?Goodnight, Jake.? John and I and Dennie had been there all day and about 10:00 I went home to get some sleep.? John stayed because Mac had begun to get really agitated in his hallucinations and he was afraid Mac, though weak, could throw himself out of his chair or hurt Shelby.

At 5:30 the next morning the phone rang and Dennie said I?d better come quickly.? By the time I arrived Mac had just won his war.? Satan had played his last card, death, and though he won a battle, he lost the war.? Mac died with his father?s arms around his shoulders and his wife?s arms holding him.? Shelby let the boys sleep until the undertaker had gone, then she sat in her chair with a child held close under each arm and told them their Daddy had gone to Heaven.

When we went with Shelby to make arrangements, the first thing she said was, ?I never expected to be doing this at 33.?? Both the visitation and funeral service were held in our Church for there was not enough room in the funeral home.? The Director said he had never held a service with so many people in attendance.? Shelby and John decided to bury Mac in the little cemetery about a quarter-mile from our home.? Arrangements were made and now Mac?s grave is close by.

Of course Mac is not there.? He has changed the landscape of Heaven for us. No longer is it a place just to be talked about in sermons or read about in the Bible.? Now it is where Mac is.? And we wonder what he?s doing today.? We see Heaven through the eyes of sorrow and joy.? And death has truly lost its sting.

My family has lost many members to cancer; two sisters, a brother, my mother and several cousins.? When the battle is done and the tears have dried, the heart regains its equilibrium and life goes on.? But for the poet, part of the healing process is putting into words our thoughts and the thoughts we see reflected in the eyes of our loved ones.? These are written for my son, Mac, and my sister Jackie who died of ovarian cancer.

FROM THE SHADOWS

I step back into the shadow,

beyond the light of my family?s

celebration.

Storing memories

that must last through eternity.

I watch for the last time

each milestone celebration;

each small moment.

I take in the wonder

of the ordinary:

The smile of the morning,

The uncertain rest of the night

and the miracle of a day renewed.

As eternity beckons

for one last touch of mortality.

One individual can be in more shape than a person with the exact same weight.

A scale has no way of measuring your body composition and the actual changes that are occurring. Lawyer: Phone hacking legal action to begin in US - seattlepi.com

LONDON (AP) ? A former tabloid editor who was once the British prime minister's media aide is suing News International over its refusal to pay his legal fees, his lawyers said Friday.

Andy Coulson's law firm DLA Piper said in a statement that it has begun proceedings against Rupert Murdoch's News International for reneging on an agreement to pay legal costs. Coulson is among those who have been arrested in the phone hacking scandal.

Coulson, a former News of the World editor who later went on to serve as Prime Minister David Cameron's top media aide, resigned as the phone hacking scandal began to boil over earlier this year. News International has not commented on whether it was paying Coulson's fees, and declined to comment Friday.

News International has also refused to confirm in the past whether or not it is paying legal fees for Coulson.

The development comes as Lawyers from the U.S. and Britain said Friday they are looking to see if American courts can take up a case against Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., the parent company of News International.

If a case is filed, it would broaden the scope of a scandal that has shaken the media mogul's empire and potentially expose it to greater financial penalties.

British attorney Mark Lewis revealed few details but suggested the legal action could begin by taking depositions from News Corp. officials and focus on alleged "corrupt practices." He said he had retained U.S. lawyer Norman Siegel, who represents families of many Sept. 11 victims, to take on News Corp.

But while Lewis predicted the first hearing could occur within two or three months, Siegel downplayed the prospect of immediate action, telling The Associated Press that he'd only been asked "to explore whether there's legal options."

Lewis "asked us to do the research. That's what we're doing," Siegel said.

News Corp. declined comment. Its stock price dipped slightly in early morning trading but bounced back up to about $15.80 a share in New York.

The media conglomerate is best known in the U.S. for its properties such as Fox News Channel, The New York Post and The Wall Street Journal. But it's been under pressure in Britain since July over revelations that its flagship Sunday tabloid, the News of the World, routinely hacked into people's phones in its quest for scoops.

The now-defunct paper is accused of systematically intercepting private voice mail of Britons in the public eye, including, notoriously, a teenage murder victim whose family Lewis now represents.

The New York-based company has already been forced to abandon its bid for full control of satellite broadcaster BSkyB Ltd. amid the scandal, and faces a multimillion pound legal bill to settle victims' claims. That bill could climb if cases were brought in U.S. venues, where penalties and settlements are far more generous.

But one law professor said such a maneuver "seems like a stretch."

Typically lawyers file a class-action lawsuit first and then solicit depositions afterward, said Chris Fairman, a law professor at Ohio State University. While the rules of American civil procedure don't prohibit the reversal, such a move is highly unusual, he said, describing Lewis' proposed actions as "a fishing expedition."

Although it's been alleged ? in a thinly sourced story carried by a rival U.K. tabloid ? that the News of the World sought to target the phones of Sept. 11 victims, Lewis said that wasn't the focus of his U.S. legal thrust.

No evidence has surfaced to back up the Sept. 11 claim, and News Corp. has dismissed it as "anonymous speculation."

Nevertheless, U.S. prosecutors are investigating the claim, and recently sent a letter to the company requesting information on any payments made by its employees to British government workers, a person familiar with the case said.

The person spoke anonymously because the information was not meant to be disclosed publicly.

Five contestants are vying to serve as ambassadors for the state and the sport of rodeo during the Miss Rodeo North Dakota Pageant to be held Oct. 6 to 9 in Minot. The pageant, in its 57th year, is being held in conjunction with the Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo, a championship for contestants from North Dakota and South Dakota competing in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and the Women?s Professional Rodeo Association.

Candidates for the title of Miss Rodeo North Dakota 2012 are Miss Rodeo Bison Stampede Sadie Wardner, 24, Coleharbor; Miss Rodeo Mandan Casey Johnson, 20, Mandan; Miss Rodeo N.D. State Fair Tasha Gruhot, 20, Grand Forks; Miss Rodeo N.D. Winter Show Courtney Mittlestadt, 18, Bismarck; and Miss Rodeo Veterans Memorial Krystal Carlascio, 23, Jamestown.

A panel of three judges will evaluate contestants in the categories of horsemanship, personality and appearance during a number of activities during the course of the four-day pageant.

A brunch featuring contestant introductory speeches, impromptu questions, modeling and public interviews will be held Friday, Oct. 7, at 9 a.m. at the Sleep Inn. Admission is $10 for advance registrants or $15 at the door. Contestants will present speeches about North Dakota and will answer more impromptu questions at a pageant luncheon on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 11:30 a.m. at the Sleep Inn. Despite legal battle, Apple keeps Samsung inside iPhone ...

Despite a globe-spanning, bruising legal battle with Samsung, Apple has little choice but to keep getting key parts for its iPhone from the electronics maker, according to sources and a news report.

Those key parts include the iPhone 5's expected main processor, the A5, as well as system memory and flash memory--components that together make up the electronic core.

Sources who track the chip industry say that Apple must stick with Samsung for the time being. Some rumors had claimed that Apple would switch to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for a so-called "shrink" (smaller version) of the A5 for the iPhone 5.

That's simply not doable, sources tell CNET. TSMC has not perfected the advanced manufacturing processes needed to make an A5 for the iPhone and, maybe more importantly, it's prohibitively difficult to jump to a different manufacturer for the same chip design.

"They don't have a choice. They can't switch [from Samsung] at this stage," said one source, familiar with the dynamics of the cell phone chip industry supply chain, referring to the A5.

A report yesterday in the Korea Times also said that Samsung will supply the A5 and memory components. (And another report claims to show a photo of the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4s' internals. While a second report claims to show the iPhone 4s.)

The same Korea Times report said Samsung Electronics is seeking a "complete ban" on sales of the Apple iPhone 5 in Korea, in retaliation to patent lawsuits by Apple against Samsung. Because of legal wrangling like this, Apple is expected in the future to turn to TSMC, and possibly other chip manufacturers, for chips beyond the A5, such as the A6.

And the report in the Korea Times goes on to make an interesting claim. The iPhone 5 will include silicon for near-field communication (NFC), a technology that allows wireless payments, enabling an iPhone to serve as an electronic wallet, among other uses. But other reports say NFC may not appear until a later version of the iPhone.

Other expected iPhone 5 features include better graphics silicon inside the A5, such as the Imagination PowerVR SGX543 graphics used in the iPad 2, and an 8-megapixel camera, an improvement over the 5-megapixel camera in the iPhone 4.

AP Newsbreak: TV producer fights extradition order (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Attorneys for a former "Survivor" producer charged with killing his wife in Mexico argued in court papers filed Monday that a judge ignored conflicting evidence while permitting his extradition to stand trial in that country.

The motion filed by lawyers for Bruce Beresford-Redman contends the extradition ruling should be overturned because there is no physical evidence to support returning the reality television producer to Cancun.

The filing accuses U.S. Magistrate Judge Jacqueline Chooljian of "culling through the facts and selecting those most supportive of probable cause while rejecting those which were exculpatory or did not fit the government's theory of culpability."

The Emmy-nominated producer has been jailed in Los Angeles since November on a fugitive warrant. Chooljian ruled in late July there was probable cause to support his extradition.

Beresford-Redman is accused of killing his wife Monica on a family vacation in April 2010.

His attorneys filed a petition for writ of habeus corpus in August arguing that his detention was not supported by facts in the case. The filing offered no details, but Monday's document attacks the credibility of several pieces of evidence and witness statements.

U.S. District Judge Philip S. Gutierrez will consider Beresford-Redman's petition.

Both federal prosecutors and the sisters of Monica Beresford-Redman have said they expect months of court and administrative proceedings before the producer is extradited. If he is convicted of aggravated homicide in Mexico, he faces 12 to 30 years in prison.

Prosecutors have presented statements from hotel guests who said they heard loud arguing and cries of distress coming from the couple's room on the night Monica Beresford-Redman went missing. Her body was found days later in a sewer cistern not far from the room the couple shared with their young children.

The producer's attorneys have claimed the noises came from Beresford-Redman and his children playing loud games throughout the night. They introduced statements from the couple's 6-year-old daughter to corroborate the claim, but the judge was not swayed.

The filing states Mexican authorities found no blood evidence in the couple's hotel room and argued that investigators, prosecutors and Chooljian used the fact that the couple was experiencing marital problems due to an affair by Bruce Beresford-Redman to support the theory that he killed his wife.

Chooljian stated in her July written ruling that she had considered all evidence, but the facts supported the case against the producer.

Defunct NASA satellite to crash to Earth this week

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - A defunct NASA science satellite is expected to fall back to Earth on Friday, showering debris somewhere on the planet although scientists cannot predict exactly where, officials said.

The 6.5-ton Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, or UARS, was carried into orbit during a space shuttle mission in 1991. It operated for 14 years, collecting measurements of ozone and other chemicals in the atmosphere.

Since completing its mission in 2005, UARS has been slowly losing altitude, tugged by Earth's gravity. On Friday, the 35-foot-long, 15-foot diameter (10.6-metres long, 4.5-metres diameter) satellite is expected to plunge into the atmosphere, NASA reported on its website.

While most of the spacecraft will be incinerated, scientists expect up to 26 pieces, with a combined mass of about 1,100 pounds (500 kg) to survive the fiery re-entry and fall down somewhere on Earth.

The satellite's orbit passes over most of the planet, from as far north as northern Canada to the southern part of South America.

NASA said the chance a piece of UARS debris will strike a person is about one in 3,200. The debris will mostly likely fall into an ocean or land in an uninhabited region of Earth.

Satellites as large as UARS re-enter Earth's atmosphere about once a year.

NASA said there have been no reports of any deaths or injuries to people from falling debris.

The largest chunk of wreckage from UARS is expected to be about 331 pounds (151 kg), says Nicholas Johnson, chief scientist of NASA's Orbital Debris Program office at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

As of Sunday, UARS was in a 133-mile by 149-mile (215-km by 240-km) high orbit around Earth. Re-entry is expected some time on Friday, although it could happen as early as Thursday or as late as Saturday.

The agency is posting updates on its website, www.nasa.gov/uars.
