US signs deal with Greece on trafficking of artefacts (AFP)

ATHENS (AFP) ? US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signed an agreement with Greece on Sunday aimed at clamping down on the import and sale of stolen archaeological artefacts.

Under the new agreement, the import of protected archaeological artefacts will be illegal if they have not first been cleared by the Greek authorities.

Clinton signed the agreement with Greek Foreign Minister Stavros Lambrinidis at a ceremony in the Acropolis museum in Athens, which itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to the iconic Parthenon.

It was the 15th such agreement the US has signed with other countries, and Clinton said the system worked.

"America is just as committed to Greece's future as we are to preserving your past," she said.

Greek Culture Minister Pavlos Yeroulanos welcomed the agreement.

"There is still a lot of traffic, a lot of thefts in general going on," he said. This kind of accord was the best way to tackle the problem, he added.

During earlier talks with Lambrinidis, Clinton discussed Greece's struggle to tackle the debt crisis that has engulfed it -- and is threatening to engulf the eurozone as a whole.

In a large clinical trial, short-term hormone therapy in combination with radiation therapy proved a more effective treatment than radiation therapy alone for men with intermediate-risk, early-stage prostate cancer.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing has enabled earlier diagnosis of prostate cancer. But treatments for prostate cancer were mostly developed and tested against later stage, bulkier tumors. The Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, a clinical cooperative group funded by NIH?s National Cancer Institute (NCI), set out to test treatments for early-stage prostate cancer.

The researchers enrolled nearly 2,000 men with early-stage prostate cancer. All had localized prostate cancer and PSA levels of less than 20 nanograms per milliliter. Because prostate cancer rates are higher among African-American men, the study enrolled nearly 400 African-American patients.

Particpants were randomly assigned to treatment with radiation alone or radiation plus short-term androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), in which drugs administered over 4 months block the natural production of testosterone. Past studies found that short-term ADT improves survival among patients with later stage tumors. The scientists looked at several outcomes, including lifespan, whether deaths occurred from prostate cancer or some other cause, and whether the cancer spread. The results appeared in the July 14, 2011, edition of New England Journal of Medicine.

The researchers found that short-term ADT and radiation improved overall survival at 10 years compared with radiation therapy alone (62% vs. 57%). Adding short-term ADT to radiation therapy also led to fewer prostate cancer-related deaths (4% vs. 8%). Similar benefits from short-term ADT were seen in white and African-American populations.

The researchers next asked whether treatment efficacy differed by disease risk. They grouped the patients into 3 risk categories?high, intermediate and low?based on several parameters, including Gleason score (in which a pathologist assigns the tumor a grade based on an analysis of tissue samples from a biopsy), PSA level and clinical stage of the disease.

The intermediate-risk subgroup benefitted the most from the addition of short-term ADT. Their 10-year overall survival rate increased from 54% with radiotherapy alone to 61% with short-term ADT and radiation. Prostate cancer-related deaths were reduced from 10% to 3%. The researchers note that a longer follow-up might also reveal some benefit from short-term ADT for men with low-risk disease. However, short-term ADT can cause hot flashes and higher rates of erectile dysfunction. At this point, the findings don?t support adding short-term ADT for low-risk prostate cancer.

?This study has important significance for clinical care,? says lead author Dr. Christopher U. Jones of Radiological Associates of Sacramento, California. ?We now have strong scientific evidence about which patients with early-stage prostate cancer benefit from short-term ADT. This is important both for improved clinical care and the utilization of health care resources.?

Mattel 2nd-quarter net income jumps 56 percent (AP)

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. ? Strong sales of Barbie and toys tied into Disney/Pixar's "Cars 2" helped Mattel's second-quarter net income rise 56 percent, the largest U.S. toy maker said Friday.

Net income for the three months ended June 30 rose to $80.5 million, or 23 cents per share, from $51.6 million, or 14 cents per share, last year. Analysts expected net income of 16 cents per share, according to Fact Set.

Revenue rose 14 percent to $1.16 billion from $1.02 billion. Analysts expected revenue of $1.1 billion. U.S. revenue rose 7 percent while international sales jumped 23 percent.

"Despite the mixed economic news, I am encouraged by our strong operating results and continue to believe we are well-positioned for the all-important second half of the year," said CEO Robert Eckert in a statement.

He added that merchandise tied to "Cars 2" had "outstanding performance." The movie was released in June.

Toys tied into summer movies generally do well. This summer a bumper crop of toy-related movies are out. In addition to "Cars 2", Mattel is selling toys related to "Green Lantern."

Barbie sales rose 12 percent. Monster High and Disney Princess dolls also performed well. One weak spot was Hot Wheels. Sales fell 2 percent.

Sales of Fisher-Price toys, including the Thomas and Friends line, rose 4 percent. American Girl sales rose 13 percent.

Mattel Inc. is based in El Segundo, Calif. Chief rival Hasbro Inc. reports results on Monday.

Rumor: Netflix traveling to Europe in 2012 (Digital Trends)

As U.S. Netflix customers? complaints rise to a clamor over the recent pricing hikes, the company is busy looking at the big picture with an aggressive international expansion plan that may even include Europe by 2012.

Netflix earlier this month announced that they would be launching their services in 43 countries by the end of 2011; a campaign focusing on Latin America and the Caribbean. This moved surprised some analyst who expected that after the first international incursion into Canada, Netflix would be making its way into the European countries.

According to Variety?s anonymous sources, leading European film distributors are confirming that the analysts weren?t too far off track. The entertainment delivery company plans on branching out into Spain and the United kingdom after next years first quarter. The European foray will happen shortly after the Latin American launch is completed.

Variety points out that Spain and UK are probably the countries referred to as the third wave of international expansion by CEO Reed Hastings back in April who told investors, ??We?ve also decided to make some early content commitments for a third international market given our high probability of success in our second international market.?

This ambitious expansion may be the reason for Tuesday???s raise in prices since all that international content will need additional funding. Variety speculates that the reason why Netflix has been mum about the move is that the company wants to build up its catalog prior to launch and hit the ground running.

Market entry won?t prove to be too hard in Spain given that Netflix would be a more unique service in that country and the company will already have Spanish-language services in place beforehand, though Spain seems to have a piracy problem. England will offer stiffer competition with BskyB and the Amazon owned LoveFilm already in place. Higher competition in countries such as Germany and France will probably have to wait past 2012 until Netflix can swallow what it chews.

Specialized mediators can work with families to settle elder care disputes

In 2007, John and Ginger Price knew that it was time to move John's mother, Mayna, from an assisted-living facility in South Carolina to a nursing home near their home in Seven Hills, Ohio. John's sister, who lived in South Carolina, could no longer shoulder the increasing caregiving responsibilities.
But Mayna was having none of it.
"She didn't want to move," says Ginger, 65. "If anything, she wanted us to move to South Carolina."
As tensions escalated, the Prices realized they might need outside help. They called John Bertschler, an elder mediator and co-owner of Northcoast Conflict Solutions. The family met with Bertschler in his Cleveland office to discuss possible solutions to the impasse.
Just 90 minutes after the meeting began, Mayna decided that she was ready to make the move to Ohio.
"Dr. Bertschler was able to approach the issue in a way that helped her understand that the move would be good for her," Ginger says. Mayna died in 2008, a year after moving into the nursing home.
As society ages, it's become more common for adult children to provide assistance to their elderly parents. But making sure that everyone, including the parent, agrees on a care plan can often be a challenge. A new type of go-between, known as an elder mediator, can guide squabbling siblings and elderly parents to solutions before conflicts tear a family apart.
A decision to see a mediator is usually prompted by disputes over at least one of three issues, says Carolyn Rosenblatt, an elder mediator in San Rafael, Calif.
"The trigger points tend to be how money will be spent, who will take care of the elder and whether the person who wants to do the caregiving is competent to do it," she says.
One common scenario, according to Patti Bertschler, co-owner with her husband of Northcoast Conflict Solutions, is when "an out-of-town sibling will swoop into town, upset with the level of care that the primary caregiver is providing, with little recognition of how backbreaking it can be to take care of mom or dad," she says. Or dad could be near death, and the kids can't agree on whether he should be kept alive by artificial means.
Mediators will guide the conversation to get input. And while mediators can share ideas that have worked for other families if there is a deadlock, says Patti Bertschler, "the parties themselves make the decision."
Elder mediators can help family members hammer out a process for solving problems, says Debbie Reinberg, a partner at Elderesolutions in Denver. For example, once the family decides mom will move, she says, "an elder mediator will help the family determine what kind of place she needs to move to, who's going to do the research on those places and how that information will be communicated so that decisions can be made."
How to find a family referee
You'll need to do research to find a good elder mediator. There's no national credentialing agency, but you can find lists of mediators at sites such as Eldercare Mediators (eldercaremediators.com), the National Care Planning Council (longtermcarelink.net) and mediate.com.
Once you have a short list of mediators in your area, ask about their credentials and their work with older adults.
"I would provide a one- or two-sentence description of what your dispute is about," says Carolyn Rosenblatt, an elder mediator in San Rafael, Calif. "If the mediator says 'Yes, I handle cases like that regularly,' that should give you confidence."
Mediators typically charge by the hour; hourly costs range from $100 to more than $300, depending on your location.
While minor disagreements may be wrapped up in less than two hours, some complicated cases can drag on for weeks. Ideally, all of the involved parties will agree to meet in person at the mediator's office. Large groups could appoint two or three family members to represent the group.

EA to shut down online servers for 13 of its games (Digital Trends)

Brace yourselves, EA gamers. Electronic Arts is up to its old tricks. The publisher has announced that it will be shutting down multiplayer servers for more than a dozen of its action and sports games. These games either have low multiplayer traffic or are sports games that are being replaced with new versions. That?s right: if you buy an EA Sports game, you have one year to play it online before it?s shut down. These shutdowns will go into effect August 11, 2011. Last year?s version of Madden and NHL will be shut down Oct. 1, 2011.

In its service update, EA claims these decisions were made with much difficulty: ?The decisions to retire older EA games are never easy. The development teams and operational staff pour their hearts into these games almost as much as the customers playing them and it is hard to see one retired. But as games get replaced with newer titles, the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles below a point ? fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles ? where it?s feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these games up and running. We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99% of customers playing our more popular games. We hope you have gotten many hours of enjoyment out of the games and we appreciate your ongoing patronage.?

Of course, 99 percent of players might not abandon last year?s Madden if they knew EA wasn?t going to shut it down, but we suppose that?s beside the point. Without further delay, here are the closures.

I have it. I really don?t know a lot about all the different kinds of skin cancer, only the kind I have. It was caused from a lifetime of sun exposure and repeated sunburning/tans. The doctor monitors it and cuts out the skin surrounding the cancer and sews me back up. It called a Mohs procedure and info can be found on Web MD.com. It basically eats away the skin and can penatrate into the bones and then you have a real problem. I?ve made friends with sunscreen and frequent doctor visits.

O'Neal sues ex-Fawcett associate for defamation (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Ryan O'Neal sued a former associate of longtime partner Farrah Fawcett on Thursday, claiming the man is responsible for a Texas university's attempts to reclaim an Andy Warhol portrait of the actress.

O'Neal's defamation lawsuit against Craig Nevius Thursday seeks more than $1 million in damages and blames the actress' former collaborator for a lawsuit filed last week by the University of Texas system against O'Neal.

That lawsuit seeks return of a mixed-media portrait of Fawcett created by Warhol that Nevius and the university claim the actress bequeathed to the school's Austin, Texas campus.

O'Neal's lawsuit states that the school has known for more than a year that he has the portrait and that he is its rightful owner. He states Warhol gave it to him and that the two men had been friends long before the Fawcett artwork was created.

"O'Neal has no intention of ever parting with it during his lifetime, and upon his death he intends to bequeath it to his son and Ms. Fawcett's only child, Redmond O'Neal," the lawsuit states.

The lawsuit claims Nevius' interviews with "Good Morning America" and Star magazine that he had helped the university investigate the whereabouts of the Warhol portrait.

"Nevius' false, malicious and defamatory accusations that O'Neal stole the Warhol portrait are a desperate attempt to draw attention to himself by fabricating a controversy where none exists."

Nevius and O'Neal have sparred for years.

Nevius collaborated on a documentary of Fawcett's fight with cancer, but sued the actor claiming he interfered in the project and removed him from it shortly before Fawcett's 2009 death. The case was later dismissed.

In a statement, Nevius called the latest lawsuit an attempt to "further harass me into silence."

"I believe this is less about the portrait of Farrah Fawcett by Andy Warhol than it is about certain actions and events that occurred during the last few years of Farrah's life which I have knowledge of and that he (and others) would prefer me to never speak about," he wrote.

The University of Texas system's lawsuit filed July 8 claims O'Neal may be holding onto other pieces from Fawcett's art collection that she donated to the school and asked a judge to order the actor to ensure he properly stores and insures the Warhol piece.

"The Warhol portrait is an irreplaceable piece of art for which legal damages could not fully compensate," the university's lawsuit states.

Directed by Mark Steven Johnson, starring Ben Affleck, Colin Farrell, Jennifer Garner, Michael Clarke Duncan

Tim: Why on earth does this movie have such a lousy reputation? The mind boggles. Daredevil is a second-tier movie about a second-tier Marvel character, and so it follows that it lacks the operatic grandeur, emotional complexity, and mind-bending special effects of the Spider-Man and X-Men movies. Therefore, taken on its own modest merits, Daredevil delivers. The backstory is generic as all get-out (kid loses dad to bad guys, gains super skills, resolves to wage a one-man war on crime), but there's a nice twist here: Daredevil is blind, and his other four senses are extraordinarily heightened. It's nice to have a hero who turns a physical handicap to his advantage (and the visual effects artists deserve props for depicting Daredevil's amplified perceptions). It's also refreshing to have a character who's a semi-regular churchgoer; even though there are plenty of folks in the Marvel universe who are allegorical Christ figures, I'm glad one of these films makes room for some actual religion when its hero explores (albeit not terribly deeply) the moral weight of his vigilantism.

As a native New Englander, I've always had a soft spot for Ben Affleck; he has the look of a classic movie star, but he also exudes an air of vulnerable decency that makes for a sympathetic hero. Michael Clarke Duncan is effectively menacing as the Kingpin, Colin Farrell plays Bullseye with roguish exuberance, Jon Favreau is solid as always as the best friend, and Jennifer Garner is convincing as an action heroine. Garner and Affleck also have pretty excellent chemistry in this movie (maybe they should go on a date or something). And there are some better-than-average musical choices throughout, though they can't all be winners (N.E.R.D.'s "Lapdance" and House of Pain's "Top O' the Mornin' To Ya," oui; Evanescence, non). I don't want to oversell this thing, but for popcorn thrills, you could do far worse than Daredevil. Call me crazy, but I think this one's due for a critical reappraisal.

Ryan: Usually, Tim, when you're able to concede some words of praise for movies that were widely panned, I'm with you, because I appreciate the fairness of acknowledging silver linings. But to say that the mind boggles when considering Daredevil's reputation, and that it might warrant a critical reappraisal... I have to draw the line somewhere. I tried to give this movie the benefit of the doubt, particularly during those early scenes when, as you've mentioned, Daredevil's backstory threatened to suffocate itself with cliches ("My client is not on trial here!"). And for the most part, the first half hour isn't completely terrible. I've come to realize that, personally, I much prefer watching superheroes duke it out with their enemies in well-choreographed hand-to-hand fight sequences, as opposed to battles that rely heavily on special effects. Daredevil's early raid on that dive bar packed a lot of punch, and aside from a bit of dodgy CGI work, it's a pretty solid fight scene with nicely orchestrated action.

Unfortunately - and this conflicts with another point Tim has made - Ben Affleck has absolutely no charisma in this movie! Normally I find him to be a decent actor, but he was unbelievably bland here. The chemistry, it can be argued, is there between him and Jennifer Garner because, frankly speaking, she really seemed to be phoning it in as well. Oh, and while we're on the topic of Dare-Lektra, their playground flirt-battle was the moment the movie's "benefit of the doubt" expired for me. Come on, that was ridiculous. A blind dude engages you in Hong Kong-style wire-fu on the teeter-totters, and he asks you where you learned how to fight? I think I'd be freaking out right about the time he followed me down the street by smell alone. I'd also like to point out that the two lovebirds met each other a grand total of three times before the climactic battle with Bullseye.

I don't know, Tim. There were just too many moments that hammered on my sense of logic, and the tone drifted from campy to serious and back again far too easily. The movie is riddled with cliches executed (presumably) without a hint of irony, from the ex-girlfriend breaking up with him on the phone to the slow pan across the roaring fireplace during the love scene, and the actors seem relatively bored throughout. With that in mind, and considering I did enjoy the close-up hand-to-hand fight scenes, I think the 45% Tomatometer is fairly accurate.

Jeff: Taken out of context, the idea of a blind lawyer who fights crime with the heightened sense perception he gained after being doused with radioactive chemicals is pretty ridiculous -- but if you read the books, particularly during Frank Miller's outstanding run, you know he's one of the more realistic, readily identifiable heroes in the Marvel universe.

With a little work, then, Daredevil could have been a pretty killer superhero movie -- the character's history is soaked in noir vibe, gritty urban crime, and one horrible tragedy after another. What did writer/director Mark Steven Johnson give us instead? An inexcusable mess, larded with hambone acting and awful dialogue, not to mention one of the most excruciating sequences in the Marvel filmography, earlier pointed out by Ryan: the Affleck/Garner playground dance.

Like Ryan, I found that scene ridiculous, but I'd already lost hope for the movie by that point. The best action sequences in the world couldn't paper over this script -- and along those lines, while I agree that Ben Affleck didn't do himself any favors here, there isn't a lot any actor could have done with lines like "I prowl the rooftops and alleyways at night, watching from the darkness. Forever in darkness. A guardian devil."
