Did scientists find a lost continent beneath the Indian Ocean?

Analyzing beach sand from Mauritius,?scientists discovered minerals between 660 million and 1,970 million years old, suggesting an ancient, lost?continent beneath the Indian Ocean.

By Charles Q. Choi,?LiveScience / February 25, 2013

The remains of a micro-continent scientist call Mauritia might be preserved under huge amounts of ancient lava beneath the Indian Ocean, a new analysis of island sands in the area suggests.

These findings hint that such?micro-continents?may have occurred more frequently than previously thought, the scientists who conducted the study, detailed online Feb. 24 in the journal Nature Geoscience, say.

Researchers analyzed sands from the isle of Mauritius in the western Indian Ocean. Mauritius is part of a volcanic chain that, strangely, exists far from the edges of its tectonic plate. In contrast, most volcanoes are found at the borders of the tectonic plates that make up the surface of the Earth.

Investigators suggest that volcanic chains in the middle of tectonic plates, such as the Hawaiian Islands, are caused by giant pillars of hot molten rock known as mantle plumes. These rise up from near the Earth's core, penetrating overlying material like a blowtorch. [What Is Earth Made Of?]

Mantle plumes can apparently trigger?continental breakups, softening the tectonic plates from below until they fragment ? this is how the lost continent of Eastern Gondwana ended about 170 million years ago, prior research suggests. A plume currently sits near Mauritius and other islands, and the researchers wanted to see if they could find ancient fragments of continents from just such a breakup there.

Digging in the sand

The beach sands of Mauritius are the eroded remnants of volcanic rocks created by eruptions 9 million years ago. Collecting them"was actually quite pleasant," said researcher Ebbe Hartz, a geologistat the University of Oslo in Norway. He described walking out from a tropical beach, "maybe with a Coke and an icebox, and you dig down underwater into sand dunes at low tide."

Within these sands, investigators discovered about 20?ancient zircon grains?(a type of mineral) between 660 million and 1,970 million years old. To learn more about the source of this ancient zircon, the scientists investigated satellite?maps of Earth's gravity field. The strength of the field depends on Earth's mass, and since the planet's mass is not spread evenly, its gravity field is stronger in some places on the planet's surface and weaker in others.

The researchers discovered Mauritius is part of a contiguous block of abnormally thick crust that extends in an arc northward to the Seychelles islands. The finding suggests Mauritius and the adjacent region overlie an ancient micro-continent they call Mauritia. The ancient zircons they unearthed are shards of lost Mauritia.

The researchers meticulously sought to rule out any chance these ancient grains were contaminants from elsewhere.

"Zircons are heavy minerals, and the uranium and lead elements used to date the ages of these zircons are extraordinarily heavy, so these grains do not easily fly around ? they did not blow into Mauritius from a sandstorm in Africa," Hartz told OurAmazingPlanet.

"We also chose a beach where there was no construction whatsoever ? that these grains did not come from cement somewhere else," Hartz added. "We were also careful that all the equipment we used to collect the minerals was new, that this was the first time it was used, that there was no previous rock sticking to it from elsewhere."

Peeling continent pieces

After analyzing marine fracture zones and ocean magnetic anomalies, the investigators suggest Mauritia separated from Madagascar, fragmented and dispersed as the Indian Ocean basin grew between 61 million and 83.5 million years ago. Since then, volcanic activity has buried Mauritia under lava, and may have done the same to other continental fragments.

"There are all these little slivers of continent that may peel off continents when the?hotspot of a mantle plume?passes under them," Hartz said. "Why that happens is still mind-boggling. Why, after something gets ripped apart, would it rip apart again?"

Finding past evidence of lost continents normally involves tediously crushing and sorting volcanic rocks, Hartz explained. The researchers essentially let nature do the work of pulverization for them by looking at sand.

"We suggest lots of scientists try this technique on their favorite volcanoes," Hartz said.

What Businesses Should Know About Social Media Hacking | Adcap ...

Social Media is very powerful, and has the ability to hurt a business quickly. It has the ability to help a business as well, and that takes a longer time.

A Social media presence is that people trust recommendations and reviews by others more than they trust advertising. So there is an upside to participating in social media, and a very big downside to not being involved.

At the basic level, reviews on Google Maps or local directories like Yelp are very influential ? how you use them. Next, when people are looking for a product or service, they often turn to Google to find out who does a good job. So showing up on a Google search is important as well. That is usually a conversation relating to Search Engine optimization and Internet Marketing, and is similar yet different from social media. The important thing to know about directories is that the reviews on them can be negative and cause a drop in business without people knowing why. So it is important to make sure your information is correct on the directories, and it is probably helpful to have some kind of contest or incentive to have your customers give you a good review.

Twitter is the most visible and influential in many cases because of its immediate nature and huge reachability. With social media accounts like Facebook and LinkedIn, most of the posting are limited to friends, groups that you belong to, or organizations you have Liked.

Twitter is completely different. If you have a twitter account, anyone can see what you say, and can see your entire history of posts, unless you delete them. You can search all of twitter for a word or phrase, and find people that talk about it. I use twitter to follow my customers, vendors, and competitors. Much of what people put out on twitter is inane chatter, but some of it is very interesting. It is like having your own private news clipping service of people providing you relevant and important information.

Then there is the element of twitter called a hashtag. You can take any word or combination of words, put a pound sign (#) in front of it, and it becomes a subject. Anyone on twitter who wants to post about that subject just has to include the appropriate hashtag, and other people set up searches so they can see what others say about it.

During the Burger King hack, people could see what was being said by either subscribing to the Burger King account, which had been changed to @McDonalds, or searching the hashtag the hacking group was using, which was #OpMadCow. Yes it got a lot of attention, but it was an obvious hack.

What can be worse is a company trying to be edgy on twitter and instead offending people. That?s happened a few times. Obviously executives at companies cringe in hearing about such stories. It can make them want to stay away from twitter and not give their social media marketing person the ability to make tweets, or just make boring ones. Or not respond quickly.

Any of those are a mistake. People don?t want to subscribe to boring and impersonal twitter accounts. Twitter is all about surfing on current events in a positive way, getting information out to potential customers through a trusted channel, and responding to potential negative publicity quickly and effectively.

A single disgruntled customer can make a big presence on twitter about customer service issues by companies. The longer it takes to respond the worse it can be.

But any PR can be made into positive. Burger King now has a lot more twitter followers. It is kind of an amusing story because it is something that people can see happening to others. And no harm was caused. So, even though it appears to have turned out OK for Burger King, what should companies do to prevent being hacked like this in the future?

First, a twitter account gets hacked by someone either getting the password or resetting the password of the account. So somewhere the hackers must have gotten a hold of the password. This is typically done in a few different ways.

The first and most common is the Social Hack. This is where someone finds out who knows the password then calls them, impersonates someone, and demands the password. The hacker can pose as a member of IT, or an executive, or anyone the person who knows the password would give it up to.

The first rule is don?t ever give out the password when asked by someone you don?t actually know. IT should not ask for the password, and if they do, tell them you need to see them in person, or they need to reset the password themselves, and tell you the new password.

The next most common if getting hacked by a botnet. This is where your computer is infected by going to a website that puts a hacking program on your computer. Your computer becomes part of a large network of infected computers, or a botnet, and the controller of the botnet can typically find out what you are doing on your computer. The botnet hacking program will typically scan for interesting information like usernames, passwords, personal information, and credit card numbers, and send those on.

The best way to protect against a botnet hack is to have a multilayered defense. A basic antivirus program on the computer. More important is to have ?a next generation firewall that scans all internet traffic for specific patterns like botnet traffic, and also prevents people from going to infected websites with a good web filter. Most people already have spam and email virus filters.

Another way to hack people is a very targeted email. This could be an email that looks like it comes from a big company, and it has a clickable link on it for you to go enter your information, including user name and password. Beware! Some of the ones that work well appear to people?s desire to get something for nothing, so they click the link and enter the information.

It is always safer to go to the website yourself on the browser, using a bookmark or a web search, than to click on an email link.

There are other things that can be done regarding password policy ? making the password somewhat complicated, or a longer phrase with numbers in it, changing it a couple times a year, and not using just one master life password on every account. In fact, I like to use a password management program, so I only have to type one master password, and all the others get remembered. Unless someone has access to that specific application and master password, they can?t hack all my accounts.

Then to be even more secure, there are things like two and three factor authentication. Hospitals use that a lot. One factor usually means something you know, like your username and password. Two factor usually means something you know, and something you have, like a username and a device that provides a different password whenever you login. There is also three factor authentication, like something you know, have, and are ? adding a retinal scan to the mix would be part of three factor.

If there are connected systems that can cause lots of damage or monetary loss if hacked, they should be protected better than the average business.??Countries already use that as part of their low level conflicts ? just like someone did to the Iranians with the Stuxtnet virus that disrupted their uranium processing.

The hacking Burger King experienced was not harmful in the big scheme of things. They got publicity, and no damage was done.

For businesses, they need to ask themselves what would happen if they lost all their records. All the payroll, accounting, customer records, inventory records. Then they need to take positive action to make sure not everything gets lost. This includes a combination of physical security, data security, and business continuity. The information needs to be backed up to a safe place, and there has to be a plan for recovering it, if it is lost. There are many good and experienced IT consultants and vendors who can help with that, so I recommend you ask your current consultant about it, and engage one if you don?t have one who can meet your needs.

Union membership declines in Missouri, Kansas

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

This map reflects nationwide union membership.

Labor union membership in Missouri dropped to 8.9 percent of all hourly wage and salary workers in 2012 from 10.9 percent in 2011, according to a report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Membership in Kansas declined as well, sagging to 6.8 percent in 2012 from 7.6 percent in 2011.

Nationally, union membership rates slipped, too: 11.3 percent of the nation?s workers were in a union in 2012, compared with 11.8 percent in 2011

Union membership in the Show-Me State has declined steadily since the bureau began charting the statistic in 1989. Since 2003, when membership rates began to decline below the national average, membership has fallen from 13.2 percent, the report said.

A right-to-work bill aiming to outlaw compulsory union membership and dues is being weighed in Missouri?s Republican-controlled General Assembly. Trade union leaders are not happy about what the law could do to their already shrinking numbers.

Kansas has been a right-to-work state since 1958.

Will a woman win 'Idol'? It's not looking good

By Craig Berman, TODAY contributor

Fox

Isabelle was sent packing in "Idol's" sudden death round.

From the first audition, the theme for season 12 of ?American Idol? has been how great the girls are. After five years of seeing guys with guitars stand with raised arms and confetti raining down on them at the finale, this is supposed to be the year where the women get their revenge.

If Wednesday?s episode is a sign of what?s to come, however, don?t bet on that happening.

The ?Idol? singers went back to Vegas, but this year, it was for a ?sudden death? round as opposed to last year?s kitschy group performances. Ten women took the stage in a ?plausibly live? episode, sang one solo, and then waited for the just-add-water instant decision making from the judges over the final 25 minutes as they determined which half advanced and which half went home. They?ll repeat this three more times until either the 20 singers for the semifinals are selected or until the entire audience falls asleep.

Wednesday?s episode was heavy on ballads and light on star power, and there wasn?t one performance that anyone will remember by the time Thursday?s episode starts. Though many of the more prominent female vocalists were on the sidelines (the other 10 sing next week), the top men will hardly be quaking in their boots when they watch this one again.

The singer with the best chance to win was Angela Miller, a no-brainer to advance to the live shows. Even though she again came out with confidence and showed off her voice well, she sounded better singing her original in Hollywood week. She might actually be the rare singer who isn?t right for the competition because covering other people doesn?t bring out her best.

Amber Holcomb made an impression closing the show, and benefits the most from the new format. Since she?d gotten very little airtime before Wednesday, she needed this to build an audience. The judges also loved Kree Harrison, and her voice seems more versatile and rich than the rest of the country singers, but she might be someone who gets lost once the live shows starts.

Beyond those solos, the most memorable number was Shubha Vedula?s ?Born This Way.? The arrangement was disjointed and distracting, and she doesn?t have much future as a dancer, but it was also original and entertaining on a night that needed someone to shake things up. She seemed a safe bet to advance, but instead was one of the final two singers onstage with one spot remaining and saw BFF Adriana Latonio get the final spot.

The biggest surprise was that Camp Mariah survivor Tenna Torres advanced. Hopefully Wednesday marked the first and last time she picked a Natasha Bedingfield song to cover. Also, Nicki Minaj hopes that she?ll come out in a different hairdo next time.

Besides Vedula, the other notable singer to get eliminated was Isabelle. Maybe the lack of a last name made the difference. The rest were no-brainers: Jenny Beth Willis and Brandy Hotard were forgettable, and Kamaria Ousley didn?t even hit that bar.

This also was an early clue in what we can expect from the judges on the live shows, and that was more optimistic. We got some actual feedback, both positive and negative, and everyone managed to stay awake the entire two hours.

But please, producers, keep Mariah Carey away from the table games in Vegas. She has the worst poker face in ?Idol? history, and watching her try and create drama as she delivered results was painful. Though, sadly, not as painful as some of what we saw onstage.

Do you think a woman has a shot of winning this season? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Sprint Force LTE handset leaks, due March 1st from ZTE

Sprint Force LTE handset leaks, due March 1st from ZTE

Sometimes tips come out of the blue: while one of our editors was out and about earlier today, someone sent him the Sprint product page above. Turns out it's for a 4-inch Sprint-branded Android phone, the Force, which looks like a version of ZTE's rumored Force that will conveniently work with the carrier's sparkling new LTE installations. Specs are middling, with Android 4.0, an unnamed 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4-inch Gorilla Glass adorned display, 5-megapixel rear camera, 1-megapixel front camera, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of ROM and a 1,730mAh battery. Still, that'll give you quick connection speeds for $50 when it launches March 1st -- presumably on a 2-year contract -- joining its more upmarket 4G ZTE stablemate, the 4.5-inch Flash, at Sprint.

It may be the 21st century, with all its technological marvels, but 6 out of every 10 people on Earth still do not have access to flush toilets or other adequate sanitation that protects the user and the surrounding community from harmful health effects, a new study has found. The research, published in ACS' journal Environmental Science & Technology, says the number of people without access to improved sanitation is almost double the previous estimate.

Jamie Bartram and colleagues explain that the current definition of "improved sanitation" focuses on separating humans from human excrement, but does not include treating that sewage or other measures to prevent it from contaminating rivers, lakes and oceans. Using that definition, 2010 United Nations estimates concluded that 4.3 billion people had access to improved sanitation and 2.6 billion did not.

The new estimates used what the authors regarded as a more realistic definition from the standpoint of global health, since untreated sewage is a major cause of disease. They refined the definition of "improved sanitation" by discounting sewage systems lacking access to sewage treatment. They concluded that about 60 percent of the world's population does not have access to improved sanitation, up from the previous estimate of 38 percent.

Language protein differs in males, females

Feb. 19, 2013 ? Male rat pups have more of a specific brain protein associated with language development than females, according to a study published February 20 in The Journal of Neuroscience. The study also found sex differences in the brain protein in a small group of children. The findings may shed light on sex differences in communication in animals and language acquisition in people.

Sex differences in early language acquisition and development in children are well documented -- on average, girls tend to speak earlier and with greater complexity than boys of the same age. However, scientists continue to debate the origin and significance of such differences. Previous studies showed the Foxp2 protein plays an important role in speech and language development in humans and vocal communication in birds and other mammals.

In the current study, J. Michael Bowers, PhD, Margaret McCarthy, PhD, and colleagues at the University of Maryland School of Medicine examined whether sex differences in the expression of the Foxp2 protein in the developing brain might underlie communication differences between the sexes.

The researchers analyzed the levels of Foxp2 protein in the brains of four-day-old female and male rats and compared the ultrasonic distress calls made by the animals when separated from their mothers and siblings. Compared with females, males had more of the protein in brain areas associated with cognition, emotion, and vocalization. They also made more noise than females -- producing nearly double the total vocalizations over the five-minute separation period -- and were preferentially retrieved and returned to the nest first by the mother.

When the researchers reduced levels of the Foxp2 protein in the male pups and increased it in female pups, they reversed the sex difference in the distress calls, causing males to sound like females and the females like males. This change led the mother to reverse her behavior as well, preferentially retrieving the females over the males.

"This study is one of the first to report a sex difference in the expression of a language-associated protein in humans or animals," McCarthy said. "The findings raise the possibility that sex differences in brain and behavior are more pervasive and established earlier than previously appreciated."

The researchers extended their findings to humans in a preliminary study of Foxp2 protein in a small group of children. Unlike the rats, in which Foxp2 protein was elevated in males, they found that in humans, the girls had more of the Foxp2 protein in the cortex -- a brain region associated with language -- than age-matched boys.

"At first glance, one might conclude that the findings in rats don't generalize to humans, but the higher levels of Foxp2 expression are found in the more communicative sex in each species," noted Cheryl Sisk, who studies sex differences at Michigan State University and was not involved with the study.

This research was funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute of Mental Health.

Human heart tissue development slower than other mammals

Feb. 20, 2013 ? The walls of the human heart are a disorganised jumble of tissue until relatively late in pregnancy despite having the shape of a fully functioning heart, according to a pioneering study.

A University of Leeds-led team developing the first comprehensive model of human heart development using observations of living fetal hearts found surprising differences from existing animal models.

Although they saw four clearly defined chambers in the fetal heart from the eighth week of pregnancy, they did not find organised muscle tissue until the 20th week, much later than expected.

Developing an accurate, computerised simulation of the fetal heart is critical to understanding normal heart development in the womb and, eventually, to opening new ways of detecting and dealing with some functional abnormalities early in pregnancy.

Studies of early heart development have previously been largely based on other mammals such as mice or pigs, adult hearts and dead human samples. The Leeds-led team is using scans of healthy fetuses in the womb, including one mother who volunteered to have detailed weekly ECG (electrocardiography) scans from 18 weeks until just before delivery.

This functional data is incorporated into a 3D computerised model built up using information about the structure, shape and size of the different components of the heart from two types of MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scans of dead fetuses' hearts.

Early results from the project, which involves researchers from Leeds, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Nottingham, the University of Manchester and the University of Sheffield, show that the human heart may develop on a different timeline from other mammals.

While the tissue in the walls of a pig heart develops a highly organised structure at a relatively early stage of a fetus's development, a paper from the Leeds-led team published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface Focus reports that the there is little organisation of the human heart's cells until 20 weeks into pregnancy.

A pig's pregnancy lasts about three months and the organised structure of the walls of the heart emerge in the first month of pregnancy. The new study only detected similar organised structures well into the second trimester of the human pregnancy. Human fetuses have a regular heartbeat from about 22 days.

Dr Eleftheria Pervolaraki, Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Leeds' School of Biomedical Sciences, said: "For a heart to be beating effectively, we thought you needed a smoothly changing orientation of the muscle cells through the walls of the heart chambers. Such an organisation is seen in the hearts of all healthy adult mammals.

"Fetal hearts in other mammals such as pigs, which we have been using as models, show such an organisation even early in gestation, with a smooth change in cell orientation going through the heart wall. But what we actually found is that such organisation was not detectable in the human fetus before 20 weeks," she said.

Professor Arun Holden, also from Leeds' School of Biomedical Sciences, said: "The development of the fetal human heart is on a totally different timeline, a slower timeline, from the model that was being used before. This upsets our assumptions and raises new questions. Since the wall of the heart is structurally disorganised, we might expect to find arrhythmias, which are a bad sign in an adult. It may well be that in the early stages of development of the heart arrhythmias are not necessarily pathological and that there is no need to panic if we find them. Alternatively, we could find that the disorganisation in the tissue does not actually lead to arrhythmia."

A detailed computer model of the activity and architecture of the developing heart will help make sense of the limited information doctors can obtain about the fetus using non-invasive monitoring of a pregnant woman.

Professor Holden said: "It is different from dealing with an adult, where you can look at the geometry of an individual's heart using MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) or CT (Computerised Tomography) scans. You can't squirt x-rays at a fetus and we also currently tend to avoid MRI, so we need a model into which we can put the information we do have access to."

He added: "Effectively, at the moment, fetal ECGs are not really used. The textbooks descriptions of the development of the human heart are still founded on animal models and 19th century collections of abnormalities in museums. If you are trying to detect abnormal activity in fetal hearts, you are only talking about third trimester and postnatal care of premature babies. By looking at how the human heart actually develops in real life and creating a quantitative, descriptive model of its architecture and activity from the start of a pregnancy to birth, you are expanding electrocardiology into the fetus."

Hadiya Pendleton mother featured in new gun control ad - U.S. News

The mother of Hadiya Pendleton, the Chicago teenager who performed at President Obama's inauguration in January and was gunned down weeks later, is the face of a new ad from Guns Against Illegal Guns.

By Andrew Rafferty, Staff Writer, NBC News

Cleopatra Cowley, mother of the Chicago teen shot and killed just a week after performing at President Barack Obama?s inauguration, is featured in a new public service announcement calling on Congress to reform the nation?s gun laws.

In the ad, paid for by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Cowley advocates for universal background checks on all gun sales.? "Tell Congress to support commonsense reforms so no more innocent children are killed. And no parent has to go through this heartbreak."

Cowley?s daughter, Hadiya, has become the one of the most recognizable faces in President Barack Obama?s efforts to curb the country?s gun laws. First Lady Michelle Obama attended the 16-year-old?s funeral earlier this month.

Cowley herself?has also become a leading figure in the fight to pass stricter gun control laws. She and her husband sat next to the first lady during last week?s State of the Union address, where the president told her story as part of his attempt to call on Congress to act.

?Just three weeks ago, she was here, in Washington, with her classmates, performing for her country at my inauguration. And a week later, she was shot and killed in a Chicago park after school, just a mile away from my house," Obama said of Hadiya.

The president again told Hadiya?s story during a visit to Chicago later in the week.

The 30-second ad begins with scenes from the president?s inauguration with Cowley narrating that it was ?the happiest day? of her daughter?s life. The ad then quickly flashes to a picture of her daughter?s casket.

A day before the State of the Union, Chicago police announced two suspects were charged with murder for Hadiya?s death. Hadiya was with her friends at a park near her school, and police believe the suspects mistakenly they were a rival gand.

Speaking to NBC News after the suspects had been arrested, Cowley said, ?My baby deserves a revolution and I pray that what happened her to her will have an impact.?

"Warning," a note preceding the car maker's version of the footage reads. "This video was filmed exclusively in a closed ares with a professional driver in ideal safety conditions. Under no circumstances should you attempt to drive this way on the open road."

According to Mini, Chicherit actually landed the jump twice?once during a private test-run earlier in the day, and then again in front of a crowd at the ski area in France's Northern Alps.

Democrats, GOP at Odds on Sequester

WASHINGTON?The impasse in Washington over how to avoid across-the-board spending cuts slated to kick in March 1 showed no signs of easing Sunday as lawmakers dug into stances offering little room for compromise.

Republicans rejected the latest plan from Senate Democrats proposing to replace the cuts, known in Washington as the sequester, with a mix of reductions to farm subsidies, higher taxes for millionaires, ending some tax breaks for businesses and more gradual military spending cuts.

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) said closing tax breaks?and the revenue generated by it?should be reserved for overhauling the tax code ...

Social Search and Its Impact On SEO - Social Web Tools

Search Engine Optimization is a vital part of creating and setting up a website these days. It ensures that your website gets more traffic and more importantly, receives relevant traffic. The common perception that prevailed was that any traffic is good traffic, however with the passage of time, this misconception has been put aside. If you have 1,000 visitors on your site daily, but only 10 are interested in buying your product, this is quite a waste of your hard work. Conversely, if you use the correct strategy to drive traffic to your website and are able to attract 100 visitors to your site out of which half are ready to purchase your product, you have struck gold.

Use Social Media to Drive Traffic

One vital tool that can be used to drive relevant traffic to your website is social media. We all know that having a web presence is important. There is simply no better way to create a positive footprint on the internet than social media. It humanizes companies and makes them more accessible and approachable.

In addition, it also does a fantastic job at not only attracting new customers, but also retaining current ones. Social media provides a universal platform where people can come voice their opinion about your company and its products.

Spread Awareness about your Brand through Social Media

So if your company is good at what it does, you can use social media to your advantage and spread awareness about your brand. However, social media also has the potential to work against you at times, so it is important to always keep the customer happy. Sometimes, companies use unhappy customers to their advantage too by simply addressing their complaints and shipping them a new product.

Social Media is Important for SEO

Besides being a great way to deal with customers, social media is becoming more important in the arena of search engine optimization. You can hire a company to do SEO for you, build links, and even market content, but don?t forget to ask for social media help too. It has become an essential component of SEO which has to be taken seriously if you want your website to rank higher on search engines. Most search engines have now incorporated social signals such as shares, views, likes, etc. into their ranking algorithm.

Use Social Media to Inform People and Search Engine Bots

Social media can be used to its fullest extent whenever a company is setting out to launch a new product or service for example. It serves a dual purpose because firstly, it informs people out there that your company is launching something new. Secondly, it also serves as fuel for SEO because it tells search engines about your company and new product?s presence on different parts of the internet. Search engines pick this up positively and it helps improve your website ranking.

Social Media is Part of your Marketing Plan

So for companies that are looking to implement a new marketing plan, look no further than using social media and your website simultaneously to improve your web presence and get your company?s name out there.

Simply, there are more chances of someone stumbling upon your business page on popular social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter than coming straight to your website. The ability of social media to link and bring together people from all walks of life is simply incomparable.

The majority of successful companies today draw more people in from their business pages on social media than any other source. Best of all, social media is a free or relatively cheap way to market your business.

White House seeks 'balanced way' to budget fix

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The new White House chief of staff says President Barack Obama is concerned about the effect the automatic budget cuts scheduled for next month will have on America's middle class.

Denis McDonough tells ABC's "This Week" that the economy has been getting stronger over the past few months. He cites improvements in housing, the stock market and consumer confidence.

He says the cuts will affect education, mental health services and food safety.

McDonough says the White House will push for what he calls a reasonable amount of spending cuts coupled with additional tax revenue.

Republicans oppose any tax increases, but the White House will insist on cutting federal red ink "in a balanced way."

Why Are Business Cards Still Employed By Corporations Nowadays ...

There are still a lot of businesspeople these days who apply business cards in their advertising campaigns. If these cards are used in a maximized and efficient way, they?ll be able to contend with today?s electronic business cards. For a lot of company owners, utilizing physical business cards will continue for decades since this is an affordable and efficient way to attain a stable position in the industry.

Business Cards These Days Can Be Bought in Reasonable Prices

The great thing concerning business cards nowadays is they have become cheaper than they were before. Businessmen do not have to spend a lot of money to have stylish and appealing business cards. This is because of the existence of websites which offer these cards for economical costs. In fact, there are also available business card themes for free that can be downloaded and modified slightly so that the company can develop its own style and design.

Numerous Entrepreneurs Still Use the Business Cards During Functions

In many business dinners, company owners still exchange details through company cards. Each time they are present in formal events, people can see their business cards on their tables. These events happen since it is still important to meet people in person. That is why it is essential to formulate cards which present data in an exciting and attractive manner. They should have contact information and details on the products and services being provided. If it?s a flower shop, for instance, the proprietor can incorporate some colourful flower images in the cards.

Tweaking Old-Fashion Company Cards to Come up with New Design Options

When it comes to designs for business cards, there?s no limit to them. Business owners always have the opportunity to try out them as they try to make sure that designs reflect their business? image correctly and add important photographs, graphics and texts. Additionally, the use of custom cards is also ideal which will ensure that the feel and look of the business cards will be based on a person?s taste and choice. However, it is necessary to ensure the organization, conciseness, legibility and clarity of the cards. These cards should have 3 essential elements.

1. Valuable Company Information

Details that should be incorporated in the business cards must include company phone number and street address, site, email, LinkedIn or Facebook account, blog address, Youtube channels as well as other contemporary connections.

2. Brand Depiction

While businesses use business cards for their marketing and advertising, they should clearly and properly represent their brand name. Being physical cards, they can be viewed by individuals more than other types of advertising so they should show the objective and brand of the company.

3. Creativity

Data can be relayed across in clear and plain text. However, corporations may want a more elegant and well-patterned picture so that their products will be noticed and remembered by their consumers. Options such as folded cards, thermography, die stamped shape, non-standard measurements and foil stamps are already accessible. Also they can have corrugated, wood or plastic business cards instead of the traditional paper cards. It?s important that they will think about what signifies their company and welcome creative strategies to get their information across. The good thing about these kinds of cards is that they will be held by people and this is something which cannot be duplicated by a website.

Distributing the Cards Only to Interested People

The cards can be given just about anywhere even to people on the streets. It?s just important not to impose them on individuals. Entrepreneurs should be conscious of whom they?re providing the cards to and if they appear interested in their offerings, this is the ideal moment to hand their cards over. Every company must bear in mind that person to person advertising is still an effective marketing practice in order to expand client base; nevertheless, business cards are able to starting a more expansive market reach.

The world these days is conquered by electronic products and factors such as chats, social networking, smartphones as well as tablets; nevertheless, business promotions still require traditional marketing practices to be successful. With the proper design, dedication and perseverance, every enterprise can utilize business cards to get more customers and enjoy a steady revenue.

Windows 7 RTM Support Ending Soon

jones_supa writes with this news from Ars Technica: "Windows 7 users will have to install Service Pack 1 if they want to continue to receive security fixes and other support beyond April 9th. With the release of a Service Pack, Microsoft's policy is to support the old version for two years. Windows 7 Service Pack 1 was released on 22nd February, 2011, so the phasing out of support is happening more or less on schedule. In spite of a growing number of post-Service Pack 1 fixes and updates, Microsoft has shown no signs of shipping a second Service Pack. Should Service Pack 1 be the sole major update for Windows 7, it will continue to receive mainstream support ? which encompasses both security updates, non-security bugfixes, and free phone support ? until 13th January 2015. Extended support ? security fixes and paid incidents only ? will continue until 14th January 2020."

Criterion cancels your weekend plans, makes its Hulu collection available for free

Followers of the Criterion Collection on Twitter or Facebook have no doubt already dove in, but those that haven't yet heard may want to direct their attention to the Hulu page featured at the source link. There you'll find hundreds of Criterion titles ready for streaming, all of which have been made available for free this weekend (for those that have access to Hulu, that is). It doesn't include all of the films Criterion has released on DVD and Blu-ray, but it's an impressive selection, including many well-known classics and more obscure gems alike; there's even some that Criterion hasn't yet released on physical media.

If you're looking for some science fiction to get started (this is Engadget, after all), we'd recommend an art house sci-fi double feature of Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's World on a Wire -- or Chris Marker's La Jetée, the inspiration for Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys, if you'd prefer something a bit shorter.
