Secret Rembrandt painting coming into view

Scientists may be one step closer to revealing a hidden portrait behind a 380-year-old Rembrandt painting.

The masterpiece, "Old Man in Military Costume" by Dutch painter Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, resides at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Scientists had noticed the painting bears faint traces of another portrait beneath its surface. Researchers had previously probed the painting with infrared, neutron and conventional X-ray methods, but could not see the behind the top coat, largely because Rembrandt used the same paint (with the same chemical composition) for the underpainting and the final version.

New studies with more sophisticated X-ray techniques that can parse through the painting's layers give art historians hope that they may finally get to see who is depicted in the secret image.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Egyptian mummy's elaborate hairstyle revealed in 3-D

Nearly 2,000 years ago, at a time when Egypt was under the control of the Roman Empire, a young woman with an elaborate hairstyle was laid to rest only yards away from a king's pyramid, researchers report.

"Our experiments demonstrate a possibility of how to reveal much of the hidden picture," Matthias Alfeld from the University of Antwerp said in a statement. "Compared to other techniques, the X-ray investigation we tested is currently the best method to look underneath the original painting."

Alfeld and an international team used macro X-ray fluorescence analysis to examine a mock-up of Rembrandt's original, created by museum intern Andrea Sartorius, who used paints with the same chemical composition as those used by the Dutch master. Sartorius painted one portrait on the canvas and then an imitation of "Old Man in Military Costume" on top. [In Photos: Looking for a Hidden Painting]

When bombarded with these high-energy X-rays, light is absorbed and emitted from different pigments in different ways. The scientists targeted four elements of the paint to fluoresce, including calcium, iron, mercury and lead, and got much better impressions of the hidden painting in the mock-up than they were able to before.

"The successful completion of these preliminary investigations on the mock-up painting was an important first step," Karen Trentelman, of the Getty Conservation Institute, said in a statement. "The results of these studies will enable us determine the best possible approach to employ in our planned upcoming study of the real Rembrandt painting."

This isn't the first time scientists have delved into Rembrandt's paintings. Previous research revealed why his art possesses such calming beauty: They found that the artist may have pioneered a technique that guides the viewer's gaze around a portrait, creating a special narrative and "calmer" viewing experience. ?Essentially, the researchers found Rembrandt painted more detail in and around the eyes of his subjects, tapping into an innate human attraction to the face.

Roccat Lua Tri-Button Gaming Mouse

The Roccat Lua Tri-Button Gaming Mouse is a simple, stripped down mouse, presenting something of an oddity in a category where gamers can tweak everything from button height to weight and center of gravity, not to mention customizing any of 10 to 20 different macro buttons. The Lua plays it cool, sticking to the basic three-button design (though it actually has four) and coming in at a much lower price than even other simple gaming mice, like the Razer Taipan or the Steel Series Kinzu. Combine this affordability with a clean design and solid performance, and the Roccat Lua is our Editors' Choice for budget gaming mice.

Design and Features
The Lua has an ambidextrous design, making it a great choice for lefties, but it doesn't feel like an ambidextrous design; rather, it felt like it was made for whichever hand you favor. The curves of the Lua are such that it felt nearly as comfortable as the right-handed Roccat Savu, making it one of the more comfortable basic gaming mice we've reviewed. Like the Roccat Savu, it has textured side panels for extra grip, but it's a textured matte-finish plastic instead of the gritty sandpaper texturing used on the Savu.

Though it's called a "Tri-Button" mouse, the Lua actually has four buttons total: right and left mouse buttons, a clickable scroll wheel, and a sensitivity adjustment button, which cycles through seven preset sensitivity settings. Like the SteelSeries Kinzu or the Razer TaiPan, the Lua is much more basic than the many-buttoned MMORPG mice seen in recent years, which cram as many buttons and features into one mouse as possible. Instead of endlessly adjustable height, weight, and a myriad of programmable macro commands, the Lua is a fairly traditional take on the three-button mouse. The mouse measures 1.4 by 2.5 by 4.6 inches (HWD), and weighs only 3.5 ounces (counting the cable).

The low-profile design is light and comfortable, and the mouse itself is plug and play with either Windows or Mac systems. For a bit of customization, however, you will want to download Roccat's driver package, which includes a dashboard for adjusting settings, like cursor and scroll speed. The management software is Windows-only (Windows XP/Vista/Win7/Win8). Roccat also covers the Lua with a one-year warranty.

While the design of the Lua is basic, but it's definitely not plain. A glowing blue logo on the palmrest has what Roccat calls a "breathing effect," pulsing slowly to let you know that the mouse is plugged in and powered on. The combination of textured black plastic side grips and soft-touch finish on the palm rest make for a comfortable feel in the hand. A six-foot USB cable provides connectivity and power, but it would have been nice to see the cable use the same type of tangle-resistant braided sheathing used on the Roccat Savu. Instead, it uses regular plastic on the cable.

Low-friction PTFE feet on the bottom let the mouse glide smoothly on nearly any surface, while Roccat's R2 Pro Optic sensor delivers up to 2,000 DPI tracking. A button just behind the scroll wheel lets you switch from one sensitivity setting to another, and the customization software will manage this further, letting you cycle between you most frequently used settings. The ratcheting scroll wheel is also good for scrolling through a list one item at a time, as when cycling between weapons in an FPS.

Performance
When tested in real gaming (some Portal and a few rounds of Team Fortress 2), the Roccat Lua was perfectly adequate, exactly what you expect with a fairly basic mouse. Cursor control was smooth and responsive, and even when scrolling through my arsenal or switching between high- and low sensitivity settings, it performed without a hiccup. In contrast the competing Razer Taipan had some misplaced buttons irritating the insides of my fingers. Some users may find the lower height to be less comfortable, but I had no problem with it.

While you can't compare the Roccat Lua to a feature-laden gaming mouse, like our Editors' Choice Gigabyte M8000Xtreme, the Lua is probably the best among its immediate peers, the simple budget gaming mouse. With none of the irritating side buttons of the Razer Taipan, and selling for less than the very similar SteelSeries Kinzu, the Roccat Lua is a solid mouse at a price that any gamer can afford. As a result, it's our Editors' Choice for budget gaming mice.

Singer silences his stutter with song on 'Idol'

By Craig Berman, TODAY contributor

?American Idol? returned to its roots on Thursday with a kinder, gentler episode filled with inspiring stories designed to tug at the heartstrings and make it even sadder when some of those getting good news in Chicago are summarily booted off in Hollywood.

The biggest story by far was Lazaro Arbos. Arbos has a stutter bad enough that even a simple sentence is difficult for him, and the judges had to help him get the words out when he told them the name of his song. But as soon as he broke out ?Bridge Over Troubled Waters,? all of that went away, and he got four yes votes from the overwhelmed panel.

Is Arbos likely to win? Probably not. But he?s a great story and he inspired anyone who watched. That, traditionally, is what the audition episodes are all about.

Unconventional for a different reason was Kez Ban. Ban doesn?t have the look of a pop singer ? she has the look of someone who plays with fire for a living, which, as a fire performer, is what she does ? and she acted like she didn?t much care how she did and was just there on a lark. Maybe she had a gig down the street and showed up to kill time.

But whether she was slumming it or simply sandbagging, Ban got four yes votes and moved on to Hollywood. Then she complained about the paperwork she?d have to fill out. Her voice was good enough to go far, but she?ll probably have to act like she cares a little bit about how she does if she wants to succeed in the competition.

That was just the tip of the iceberg in the TV-movie-of-the-week category:

  • Mariah Pulice was recovering from an eating disorder, and clutched her golden ticket as if it were an affirmation of all the work she?d done to get there, which it pretty much was.
  • Clifton Duffin?s parents had never heard him sing, and then got called in to hear his good news.
  • Brandy Neelly was adopted by her aunt after her mom and dad had problems, which is not something viewers heard about when she made it to Hollywood a year ago.

All three moved on. Apparently this ?not taking the stories into account when making decisions? thing everyone talked about before the season began is not 100 percent true.

Another familiar face making a return trip was Johnny Keyser. He got bounced in Hollywood a year ago, was one of four contestants with a chance to get voted back to be a finalist, and lost out on that as well to Jermaine Jones. (Nice call on that one, America!) Performing before a panel that featured three different judges than he saw a year ago, Johnny got the second chance he was looking for.

"Hopefully you've done some work so you won't crash and burn this time," Randy Jackson said. Thanks for the support, dawg!

Also of note: Gabe Brown was discovered in Iowa City, was bused to Chicago, bribed the judges with cookies and got in despite a very unpoppy like rock vocal. If you want to get in good with the folks who count at this stage, sweets are apparently the way to go.

The judges' story lines were the same as the first episode. Mariah Carey is the one all the contestants genuflect before. Nicki Minaj is the one who does whatever it takes to keep herself from dying of boredom, whether it?s accents, deadpan humor or the slow torture of dangling faint hopes in front of overmatched contestants and watching that dreamlike optimism wither and die in their eyes. And Keith Urban is the laid-back dude who?s supposed to be normal.

But that apparently changes next week when the show moves to Charlotte, N.C., and the drama between the women on the panel really starts. Thursday night was inspiration. Next time, apparently, it?s just frustration.

Do you think Lazaro will go far in the competition? Which of the other hopefuls stuck out to you? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!

Top Insider Trades: Stock Sales By Facebook's Engineering VP And ...

In a victory for common sense, the trading behavior of company executives, directors, and large shareholders in the stocks of firms they're registered "insiders" at have been proven profitable to monitor by both academic studies and (more importantly) the experience of your fellow professional investors.

Below are lists of the top 10 mainly open-market insider purchases and sales filed at the Securities and Exchange Commission Monday, Jan. 14, 2013 as ranked by dollar value.

Please note, however, that these are factual lists, not buy and sell recommendations. Dollar value is only one metric to assess the importance of an insider transaction, and, frankly, often not even the most important metric that determines if an insider transaction is significant.

Phillip Frost, Chairman and CEO of pharmaceutical and diagnostics company Opko Health (NYSE:OPK), bought $160,586 worth of company stock. William Adams IV, President and Principal Executive Officer of Nuveen Commodities Asset Management, LLC, bought $73,009 in one of the company's funds, the Nuveen Credit Strategies Income Fund (NYSE:JQC), of which he is Vice President. Harold Simmons, Chairman and Director of Valhi (NYSE:VHI), bought $58,800 worth of company stock. Valhi is a multinational holding company with operations in chemical, components, waste management, and titanium metal. Edmond Furlong, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of simulation-driven design company EXA (NASDAQ:EXA), bought $57,161 worth of company stock.

In sales, Michael Schroepfer, Vice President of Engineering at Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), sold $3,481,508 worth of company stock. Harald Kroeger, a director of electric car company Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA), sold $1,562,687 worth of company stock. Humberto Alfonso, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of North America's largest chocolate manufacturer, Hershey (NYSE:HSY), sold $750,000 worth of stock. At the online directory / social networking company Yelp (NYSE:YELP), Geoffrey Donaker, Chief Operating Officer, sold $735,189 worth of stock. Fabrizio Freda, CEO of cosmetics company Estee Lauder (NYSE:EL), sold $640,062 worth of company stock.

At InsiderInsights.com, we find new investment ideas just about every day using these and more intricate insider screens to determine where we should focus our subsequent fundamental and technical analysis. And while stocks don't (or shouldn't) move up or down based on insider activity alone, insiders tend to be good indicators of when real stock-moving events like earnings surprises, corporate actions, and new products may be in the offing.
