to 17. The researchers then measured stress based on self-reported data from the respondents.

?Stress in parents may be an important risk factor for child obesity and related behaviors,? said Dr. Elizabeth Prout-Parks, a physician nutrition specialist at The Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia, who led the study. ?The severity and number of stressors are important.?

Some of the stressors weighing heavily on parents with obese children included poor physical and mental health, money woes, and being a single parent ? the last factor having the strongest link to child obesity. Although previous research has found a connection between parental stress and child obesity, the researchers say that their study covered a more diverse population, both ethnically and socioeconomically, than did previous studies.

New interactive system detects touch and gestures on any surface

ScienceDaily (Oct. 9, 2012) ? People can let their fingers -- and hands -- do the talking with a new touch-activated system that projects onto walls and other surfaces and allows users to interact with their environment and each other.

The system identifies the fingers of a person's hand while touching any plain surface. It also recognizes hand posture and gestures, revealing individual users by their unique traits.

"Imagine having giant iPads everywhere, on any wall in your house or office, every kitchen counter, without using expensive technology," said Niklas Elmqvist, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University. "You can use any surface, even a dumb physical surface like wood. You don't need to install expensive LED displays and touch-sensitive screens."

The new "extended multitouch" system allows more than one person to use a surface at the same time and also enables people to use both hands, distinguishing between the right and left hand.

Research indicates the system is 98 percent accurate in determining hand posture, which is critical to recognizing gestures and carrying out commands. The technology has many possible applications, said Karthik Ramani, Purdue's Donald W. Feddersen Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

"Basically, it might be used for any interior surface to interact virtually with a computer," he said. "You could use it for living environments, to turn appliances on, in a design studio to work on a concept or in a laboratory, where a student and instructor interact."

Findings are detailed in a research paper being presented this week during the Association for Computing Machinery Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology (ACM UIST 2012) in Cambridge, Mass. The paper was written by doctoral students Sundar Murugappan and Vinayak, who uses only one name, Elmqvist and Ramani.

The system uses the Microsoft Kinect camera, which senses three-dimensional space.

"We project a computer screen on any surface, just a normal table covered with white paper," Ramani said. "The camera sees where your hands are, which fingers you are pressing on the surface, tracks hand gestures and recognizes whether there is more than one person working at the same time."

The Kinect camera senses depth, making it possible to see how far each 3-D pixel is from the camera. The researchers married the camera with a new computer model for the hand.

"So we can isolate different parts of a hand or finger to show how far they are from the surface," Elmqvist said. "We can see which fingers are touching the surface. With this technology, you could potentially call up a menu by positioning your hand just above the surface."

That camera coupled with the hand model allows the system to locate the center of each hand, which is necessary for determining gestures and distinguishing between left and right hands.

Researchers explored possible applications, including one that allows the user to draw a sketch with a pen and then modify it with their hands.

"We can detect gestural interactions between more than one hand and more than one user," Ramani said. "You could do precision things, like writing with a pen, with your dominant hand and more general things, such as selecting colors, using the non-dominant hand."

Researchers tested the concept in two user studies, one with 14 volunteers and the other with nine. Findings from one study indicated display features should be no smaller than 18 millimeters, or about an inch, to be efficient.

"While new and more precise cameras will improve accuracy, we have established the necessary hand models and principles for the system," Ramani said.

The other user study showed the system can effectively determine hand posture and whether the right or left hand is being used.

"We wanted to see how accurate we could be while figuring out different configurations, such as touching with all 10 fingers, which hand is being used and so on," Elmqvist said.

Patents are pending on the concept.

The research has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the Donald W. Feddersen Chaired Professorship at Purdue School of Mechanical Engineering.

Stonehenge reveals new secrets in 3-D scan

Stonehenge, one of world's the most famous ancient landmarks, has been studied for centuries. Now, new evidence provides insight into the construction of the famous stone circle.

Using 3-D laser scanning technology, the British company English Heritage conducted an extensive analysis of Stonehenge, revealing that more effort was put into certain parts of the circle than others.

"They were looking at each stone and discovered layers of tool marks found in specific areas," said Marcus Abbott, head of Geomatics and Visualization at ArcHeritage.

As the researchers examined them, they found they were looking at ancient, faded art.

"They began to discover prehistoric carvings, previously unknown carvings from the Bronze Age, mostly on four stones within the actual monument. These panels of artwork on the stones were deliberately placed," Abbott said. "It shows particular significance that they appear facing east towards an area of burial mounds and then also appear to be facing the center of Stonehenge."

The new evidence suggests that more effort was put into creating this part of Stonehenge because most ancient people would have approached the landmark from that side.

"The significance of the working reveals that Stonehenge was much better finished on one side than the other. They were both completed but they chose better materials, which suggests the majority of people would have seen it from one side."

Researchers have long suspected this, but the new research has finally confirmed the idea.

"This is very significant because previously there was no physical evidence for this," Abbott said. "Now we actually have scientific data to back up those theories."

The shape and workings of the stones give insight into the intent of the landmark's creators.

"The study also shows that the techniques and amounts of labour used vary from stone to stone. These variations provide almost definite proof that it was the intent of Stonehenge's builders to align the monument with the two solstices along the NE/SW [Northeast/Southwest] axis," English Heritage said in a statement. "The sides of the stones that flanked the solstice axis were found to have been most carefully worked to form very straight and narrow rectangular slots."

In contrast, the other stones have visibly more natural outlines.

"This strongly suggests that special effort was made to dress those that flank the NE/SW axis to allow more dramatic and obvious passage of sunlight through the stone circle on midsummer and midwinter solstices."

I?ve been getting a lot of questions about my sister?s baby shower so I thought it would be much more productive to post about it!

As a writer myself and the daughter(s) of a Language Arts teacher Uzma and I grew up with a genuine appreciation for books. We had a bookshelf in our basement overflowing with some of our childhood favorites and in recent years I?ve started to feel like books might someday become obsolete. I get that it?s cute to see a baby on YouTube try and swipe her finger across the page of a magazine and then get all THIS THING IS BROKEN! but I think it?s also kind of sad; everything for babies and toddlers is electronic now.

(Don?t even get me started on the TVs stuck in the headrests of cars over the last 10 years! Seriously that?s a soap box I?ll need landing gear to come down from!)

So when I started planning my sister?s baby shower I immediately knew that Uzma would want her little one to know what it feels like to put a crease in a story from his or her Little Golden Books collections. She?d want them to know what the real paper pages smell like and use their little fingers to turn those pages in excitement during a bedtime story.

I did a Google search for book themed baby showers and decided on a Build-A-Library theme where I asked guests to bring their favorite childhood books to help build a library for Uzma and BIL?s future bookworm. And then I knew we needed a mascot so I came up with Baxter! And yes bookworms have arms. To hold books, duh!

I put him on the invitations I designed.

Each guest also got a card to sign and put in the baby?s book. Fill in the baby?s last name where I blurred (i.e. BABY SMITH, BABY JOHNSON, etc.) and don?t forget to write your name! Of course if you already named your baby the card could say BABY KIMMY instead of using the baby?s last name.

Guests also got a card letting them know that babies were invited and what the dress code was!

I also put Baxter on thank you cards I made and printed for Uzma to send out after the shower and Baxter also made an appearance on the cupcakes I ordered from Margo Lewis? boutique Cake Bliss in Brooklyn!

A quick note about Cake Bliss: ALL their cupcakes are vegetarian! As in NO ANIMAL LARD is used in any of their cupcakes! They also have a vegan chocolate option if you prefer no animal byproducts whatsoever. We ordered coconut cucumber, red velvet and vegan chocolate; all 3 varieties were delicious!

I ordered envelopes for the invites and thank you cards from Action Envelope (they have incredible customer service and a huge selection!) but another option is to send your invitation as an Evite to save a few bucks and stamps.

So that?s the story behind the little worm and the books at the shower! Thank you guys for showing so much interest in this lovely event and exciting time in our lives. I?m sure at some point Uzma?s little one will get something electronic that?s super cool (that I?ll totally want to borrow), but until that time comes he or she will have an awesome library filled to the brim with love and memorable classics.

Facebook crosses billion threshold, on quest for growth

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc passed the 1 billion user mark in September, a level of global penetration that is a remarkable achievement for an 8-year-old social network and a heightened challenge to its quest for sustained growth.

Facebook, which has endured a bruising four months in the stock market since a haphazard May 18 initial public offering, has acknowledged that a slowdown in new-user acquisition is inevitable as its worldwide reach expands.

But doubts over whether the company can squeeze more and more dollars out of each network member - given well-publicized struggles to monetize the growing ranks of users who access Facebook from mobile devices - have shaved more than 40 percent off Facebook's value since its IPO, although shares still trade at a lofty 45 times projected 2012 earnings.

Thursday's announcement that Facebook crossed the billion threshold on September 14 confirmed expectations on Wall Street that growth is actually trailing off.

The latest quarter's growth appeared likely to come in lower in raw numbers, let alone by percentage, than the April-June quarter's 54 million new users. About 45 million joined from the start of July, when it had 955 million users, through September 14.

And the previous quarter was way down from the 102 million who joined during the first three months of 2012.

In an interview on NBC's "Today" show broadcast on Thursday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg was asked by co-anchor Matt Lauer how, with a billion users, the company wasn't "killing it" by making money.

"It depends on your definition of 'killing it.' I mean, we are making billions of dollars," Zuckerberg fired back.

In its last earnings report, Facebook said revenue increased by 32 percent to $1.18 billion in the second quarter. But that marked the slowest pace of quarterly revenue growth since the first quarter of 2011 - the earliest data available.

Founded by Zuckerberg in a Harvard dorm in 2004, Facebook took three years to reach 50 million users. By 2010, that hit 500 million. But with Google Inc launching its own social network and other services from Twitter to YouTube vying for Web surfers' time, the social network is keen to keep rolling out new products to keep its members engaged.

"The key, of course, is monetization of those users," Hudson Square analyst Dan Ernst said.

Facebook, stung by criticism over the efficacy of its ads, concerns about its mobile business and questions over growth, turned on the charm in the past month.

Zuckerberg went on the offensive to soothe investors, making his first public appearance since the May IPO on September 11, confidently talking up the company's mobile prospects and hinting at new initiatives in search and e-commerce. It appeared to work, stemming the share price's slide below $18. The stock now trades above $21 - still well below its IPO price of $38.

Zuckerberg said his company's new mobile ads were delivering better results for advertisers than its traditional ads on personal computers.

In addition, this week, Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and board member Marc Andreessen have appeared on the CNBC business channel and panels at a high-profile advertising conference in New York.

The company said on its website it now has 600 million mobile users, up from 543 million at the end of June.

"There's 5 billion people in the world who have phones, so we should be able to serve many more people and grow the user base there," Zuckerberg said.

As for his own phone habits, he said he owns several devices, and called an iPhone 5 he received personally from Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook "a wonderful device."

DWINDLING MORALE

Facebook's share price and persistent, skeptical scrutiny of the company have taken a toll on its employees, many of whom had counted on a big post-IPO payday. Zuckerberg acknowledged that morale at the company could be better but said its 4,000 employees remained focused on building and improving Facebook's products.

"We are obviously in a tough cycle now," he said. "That doesn't help morale."

Facebook has rolled out a spate of initiatives to spur more growth, including a new advertising platform and measurement methods to show marketers they are getting bang for their buck.

The company also said on Thursday it has seen 1.13 trillion "likes," or endorsements by users, since it launched the feature in February 2009. Many advertising campaigns that companies conduct on Facebook are designed to garner "likes."

But it is also exploring options beyond advertising, which accounted for roughly 84 percent of the total revenue in the second quarter. On Wednesday, the company also said it was letting U.S. users pay a fee to boost the visibility of their posting.

Last week, Facebook unveiled a feature that lets U.S. users buy and send gifts such as glasses, pastries and gift cards to friends - signaling its intent to play a bigger role in e-commerce.

On Thursday, Zuckerberg focused on what he called an historic milestone: connecting about one in seven people on the planet across both the developed and developing world.

Facebook's number of users is larger than other social media services such as Twitter, which has 140 million monthly active users, and Google+, the Internet search company's year-old social network, which has 100 million monthly active users.

Google's overall Internet properties, including video website YouTube, garnered 1.16 billion unique visitors in August, according to data analytics firm comScore.

Facebook was the world's No.3 most visited Internet property, behind Microsoft online properties, with 821.5 million monthly unique visitors in August, according to comScore's figures, which do not include users accessing websites on mobile devices.

The median age of Facebook's users is 22. The five largest user countries, which the company listed alphabetically, are Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico and the United States.

"Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life," Zuckerberg said in his blog post.

He says that it's a fairly high quality business. ?First, it's the largest golf club operator in Canada and a bunch of those clubs are highly ranked. ?What's more is it's a highly cash flow generative business with annual dues and entry fees being paid up front. ?It also has a competitive advantage given that club members have access to the other clubs, he says. ?As for the tourism business, most Alaska cruise ship passengers dock at ClubLink's docks in the Port of Skagway, Gottfried explains. ?

Some other reasons for why Gottfried is picking ClubLink is despite the recession, he says that earnings have been "resilient". ?He also says that CEO Rai Sahi is a "terrific owner-operator." ?

He says that ClubLink has a massive opportunity in the Florida golf market.?

Gun training for tax cops is off target: IRS watchdog

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Armed Internal Revenue Service agents need more thorough firearms training and they need to be more consistent in reporting accidental firings of their guns, said the tax-collecting agency's watchdog on Tuesday.

"Special agents not properly trained in the use of firearms could endanger the public, as well as their fellow special agents, and expose the IRS to potential litigation over injuries or damages," said J. Russell George, Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.

The inspector general said agents used firearms in self-defense eight times and accidentally fired their weapons 11 times during fiscal years 2009 through fiscal 2011.

In the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, special agents carry guns for executing search warrants and arresting suspects. They are the only federal agents who can investigate potential criminal tax code violations.

These agents generally have met the same firearms training requirements that apply to other federal law enforcement agencies, TIGTA said. Still, some of the IRS agents did not meet all the firearms training requirements.

Additionally, special agents involved in accidental shootings were not always forced to undergo remedial training when they should have been.

There is no IRS nationwide policy for keeping firearms training records and reports were not always filed after agents fired their guns, the report said.

The IRS said in response that the agency agreed with TIGTA recommendations for stronger reporting and training accountability.

Debating Jeremy Siegel & Stocks for the Long Run | The Big Picture

Over the years, I have debated Wharton (University of Pennsylvania) Professor Jeremy Siegel numerous times. He is a very nice fellow who wrote the widely read book Stocks for the Long Run (aka SFTLR).

If I were to take the other side of the SFTLR argument, I would focus on 3 things:

My main critiques are:

1) Buy & Hold delivers inferior returns. Even worse, most Humans have a hard time sticking to it.

2) A simple system of either Valuation ? think Shiller?s 10 Year Cyclically adjusted P/E ? or Tactical application of Moving Average ? Mebane Faber?s 10 Month moving average ? significantly improves returns by reducing equity exposure and volatility as markets crash or have major corrections;

3) The current Fed driven markets (indeed, from 1981-2011) is an aberration that STFLR does not (and indeed, can not) anticipate. To quote either Jan L. A. van de Snepscheut or Yogi Berra: ?In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is.?

4) There are a myriad of data issues with SFTLR, particularly Survivorship bias, as described by jason Zweig in the WSJ and Birinyi Associates.

Regardless of my views, I want to crowd-source the arguments pro and con for SFTLR ? What does Siegel get right, what does he get wrong? What is the weakest and strongest parts of his viewpoints?

China holiday crash kills five Germans as millions take to roads

BEIJING (Reuters) - A bus struck a container truck near Beijing and burst into flames on Monday, killing five German tourists and a Chinese driver as motorists jammed roads at the start of a week-long holiday.

Fourteen people were injured in the mid-morning accident as the bus on the road linking the capital to the neighboring city of Tianjin ran into the back of the truck, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

Police were investigating the cause.

China has waived road tolls for the holiday, prompting 85 million motorists to take to the roads - 13.3 percent more than last year, the Transport Ministry said.

Officials expected a total of 740 million trips to be undertaken.

Traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death in China, with many new and often poorly trained drivers taking to the roads.

Police, quoted by state media, say about 100,000 have been killed in accidents annually over the past decade, with the figure dipping to 70,000 last year.

Petersburg mayor faces local architect in Ward 4 election

PETERSBURG - Petersburg Mayor Brian Moore is facing a challenger - local architect Terry Ammons - in the contest for the 4th Ward City Council seat.

The 48-year-old Ammons says that it has been interesting to try and tell people quickly why he is qualified for council, feeling that it's something he's been working toward for quite some time "in terms of the nature of my work and the community service that's part of a lot of the work."

"I have a lot of experience working in the public sphere," Ammons added. "My work has really let me develop a lot of skills that I think are really relevant to what I could apply to serving the ward as a councilman."

Ammons said that he mulled over whether he would run in the current election and decided about a day or so before the June filing deadline that he would run. "I actually thought the deadline was in July and then I found out it was in June," Ammons said.

He said that he believes in the public process and that he also feels that citizens have been left out of the process.

"I can't do anymore as a business owner," Ammons said, adding that he's tried to effect positive change in the city and that he felt there was more he could do. "I knew this might be a step I would take on at a some point in time."

Ammons says he felt he's been in the city long enough and has built two businesses and renovated several buildings, something he describes as a record to show for what he has done here.

The candidate said that he has a list of priorities for the city if he wins, including economic development, youth and education, arts and culture and responsible government among other issues. "I think there's a lot of low-hanging fruit out there," Ammons said. "Our City Council has to make education a priority and I don't think that's just the school system."

The candidate also says that he feels the city hasn't been effectively utilizing its history. In his campaign materials, he says he wants to establish a partnership with the National Park Service to establish a visitor contact station at South Side Depot and that he wants a civil rights museum in the former Trailways bus station at the intersection of East Washington and North Adams streets. The city recently announced a grant from the Virginia Department of Transportation and The Civil War Trust which will be used to establish a Visitor Contact Station at South Side Depot. Additionally, a private nonprofit group has been working with the city on establishing a civil rights museum in the former Trailways station.

"Our history is the thing that crosses cultural lines," Ammons said. "We need to create a new narrative for this city."

As part of that new narrative, Ammons said he would push a "market-to-market" project that he says would eliminate a "competing situation" between "uptown and downtown." The project would connect the market square area in Old Towne and the Halifax Triangle. "We need to say these are our two market squares," Ammons said. He added that the history of the markets is not one of segregation only, but that people shopped at both markets.

One of the challenges that Ammons sees is a culture of distrust of organizations and government by residents of the city. "The city should really be deciding what the city leadership can do," Ammons said. "I don't think it's the council's job to make school policy, but you can say that education is one of the city's biggest problems," and direct resources to the issue.

Moore, 49, has been a telecommunications consultant and contractor for the past 27 years.

"The hard work and effort I've put in the last eight plus years," Moore said, is one of his qualifications for being re-elected. "I've got the experience and knowledge to move projects forward. That's evident. Look around in the city and see what's going on."

That has been work not only on the project side, Moore says, but in working with city administration to hire more professional leadership on the city's staff. "We've seen a lot better customer service and people are more responsive."

Moore said that the city has also begun to take a different approach to projects, particularly with the new city manager in place by looking forward "we're looking three, five, 10 years down the road."

One example of that is a hotel-conference center plan, which the city has been working closely on with Virginia State University. Moore said it should be coming online in the next two to three years. "We're working to build the economic base to support the programs," Moore said. Moore said the hotel and conference center should be ready approximately six months before the VSU events center on campus. "The goal is to put the city in a position to use the revenue from the project to go into debt service. We've already got folks interested in the project. We've been getting multiple calls. We're building a lot of energy. We're building a lot of success as we move forward."

Moore said that the success of the project along with other projects in the downtown and Ward 4 affects all of the city.

Moore said that as more businesses and projects come to the city, it can benefit all residents. "Once we get the revenue coming in, people always want the real estate tax done, but first you have to build the value of the land book," Moore said. He said that many people make comparisons between the city's real estate taxes and neighbors, including Chesterfield. "That's not a fair comparison, because you have to look at the land book value."

The mayor said that over the past four years he's seen not only a change inside the city, but the perception of the city by outsiders.

"When we go places now. People take Petersburg seriously," Moore said. "It's a great city. I love this city. It's a great place to be."

Some of the growth over the past four years includes market driven, market rate loft style apartments, including the Perry Street Lofts, Courthouse View and the Oddfellows Building. Additionally, he said that the city was able to sell the landfill - which had been owned by the city and would have been closed, costing taxpayers millions of dollars. Instead, the City Council sold the landfill to Container First Services. The business now pays the city $1 per ton of trash per day up to $1,000 a day for $365,000 a year in revenue.

Moore said that he's running for re-election because he wants to continue the hard work that he's already put in and see several projects finished to completion - including work to establish a visitor contact station at South Side Station and an effort to transform the former Trailways bus station into a civil rights museum - and to continue to work with the current City Council.

He added that the work isn't done yet, and the city must continue to develop its economic development engine. "We have to look at new ways of collaborative efforts and regionalism," Moore said.
