Several years ago my wife and I decided to plant an above ground vegetable garden. The concept is relatively simple. You build a box to hold your soil and organic materials, and then plant your seeds. The benefit of an above ground garden is that you don't have to dig up your yard and deal with rocks, roots, and poor soil.

We were excited to get started and made a list of everything we needed. Once the box was constructed, we layered in the manure, organic materials, and top soil. Finally, we laid out our vegetable rows and planted the seeds, topped with a light layer of planting straw, and watered. Then we waited, and waited, and waited. Nothing happened. Every morning as soon as it was light, I would run out to the garden to see what was growing. Every morning it was the same story, nothing. I was discouraged.

Starting a business from home to earn income online is a lot like planting a vegetable garden from seeds. You work like crazy to get from the idea stage to implementation. The harvets cycle was very satisfying, but it took alot of patience and confidence that with the right effort, the vegetables would grow.

Back to the business - Most people who have not had the vegetable garden experience would have given up after making only twenty bucks after six months. Not me. I knew that the seeds had been planted, and I was diligently watering and weeding daily in the form of email marketing and content distribution to build my subscriber list. True, six months may seem like a long time to not generate revenue from your efforts, but it really isn't if you consider that the business can support you for the rest of your life. The patience and persistence paid off when the money came flowing in, just like tomatoes ripening on the vine.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Arnold Schwarzenegger says his wife, Maria Shriver, was told to "snap out of it" by her mother for her attempts to persuade him against running for California governor in 2003, a conversation that ultimately opened the door to his successful candidacy.

Eunice Shriver told her daughter that her husband would be "angry for the rest of his life" if she stopped his ambitions, Schwarzenegger writes in his new autobiography, "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story."

The former governor says in the book that he had decided against running to recall Gov. Gray Davis after his wife implored him not to for the sake of their family. Maria Shriver announced his decision to their four children.

But he writes that when Maria Shriver told her mother about her efforts to thwart Schwarzenegger's political ambitions, Eunice told her daughter that women in their family "always support the men when they want to do something." Schwarzenegger says he didn't know about the conversation at the time, but learned of it later.

Maria Shriver then softened her stance, paving the way for Schwarzenegger to announce his candidacy on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," where he says he felt most comfortable.

The announcement came after a week of wavering. Schwarzenegger says before he headed to the TV appearance, his wife handed him two pieces of paper with talking points she had written: one in case he decided to run, another in case he decided not to.

He writes that Shriver went on to become a key ally and adviser to his campaign and eventual governorship.

Schwarzenegger has often said that Maria's mother and her father, Sargent Shriver, were essential to his eventual decision to seek public office, and the most "extraordinary human beings I've ever met." But he also writes in the book that he often teased his wife that the close-knit Democratic Kennedy clan was "like a bunch of clones" because there was such conformity among them.

A spokesman for Shriver, Matthew DiGirolamo, declined to comment on the contents of the book.

"Total Recall" will officially be published next week. The Associated Press purchased an early copy.

The book is part of an effort by the onetime "Mr. Universe" and Hollywood action star to rebrand himself after leaving office with a mixed record and subsequent embarrassing revelations about a fling he had with the family's housekeeper. Schwarzenegger, who fathered a son with the housekeeper, says he also let boy down.

Schwarzenegger, 65, said he avoided telling his wife for years about the boy, who is now a teenager, even when Shriver asked him, partly because of his longtime penchant for secrecy, and his fear that the news would become public and undermine his political career. He told his wife in January 2011, when she confronted him the day after he left office.

In an interview with "60 Minutes" scheduled to air Sunday, Schwarzenegger said having sex with his housekeeper was "the stupidest thing" he ever did to his now-estranged wife and caused great pain to her and their four children. CBS aired excerpts of the interview Friday.

"I think it was the stupidest thing I've done in the whole relationship. It was terrible. I inflicted tremendous pain on Maria and unbelievable pain on the kids," Schwarzenegger tells "60 Minutes."

Schwarzenegger says he also let down the son he fathered with the housekeeper.

Shriver filed for divorce in July.

In his book, the usually ebullient Schwarzenegger admits to some loneliness, even though he packed his schedule with speeches, projects and movie-making after Shriver and the children moved out of the house. He said his career had been fun for 30 years because he shared it with Maria.

They had done everything together, he writes.

The former GOP governor also writes about a 2003 White House meeting with Karl Rove in which the top GOP strategist told him the recall would not happen and instead introduced the actor to then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice as his pick to run for California governor in 2006.

Schwarzenegger felt snubbed.

He asks, "How could Rove have been so wrong?"

Rove's office said he was traveling Friday and could not be reached for comment.

Rice's chief of staff at Stanford University, Georgia Godfrey, said Rice cannot recall "any conversation on this subject."

"She has stated many times in the past that she has no desire to run for public office and those sentiments have still not changed," Godfrey said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.

(Reuters) - Several people became ill after eating steaks that may contain E. coli bacteria sold at a store in Edmonton, Alberta, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said on Wednesday.

The announcement follows a series of beef product recalls that have raised concerns about meat processing standards in Canada.

The CFIA warned the public not to eat Kirkland brand beef steaks sold between September 4 and 7 at the Costco Wholesale Corp store on 50th Street in Edmonton.

The agency has not identified the supplier of the potentially contaminated beef, said CFIA spokesman Tim O'Connor.

One of the suppliers to the store is XL Foods' Brooks, Alberta, plant. Beginning in early September, privately held XL Foods has voluntarily recalled more than 250 beef products made at the plant after positive findings of E. coli.

E. coli bacteria can cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses.

XL Foods issued a statement saying it is "deeply concerned" for the people who became ill, adding that there has been no definitive link between its products and the cases of illness.

The United States halted imports of beef products from the XL Foods plant in Brooks, which is one of the largest in Canada, on September 13.

Canada is the sixth-largest beef and veal exporter in the world.

The CFIA has completed its review of the plant's food safety controls and found XL Foods could not demonstrate that it regularly updated its plan to control E. coli in the facility, the agency said.

St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 27, 2012 ? Retailers expect to boost holiday hiring this year as the economy recovers. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises job seekers to apply early and research potential employers for the best chance at landing a job that fits your needs.

Target Corp. has said it plans to hire between 80,000 and 90,000 seasonal workers at its stores and distribution centers. Kohl?s says it will hire 52,000 holiday workers.

?Major retailers? hiring plans are welcome news for job seekers,? said Michelle L. Corey, BBB president and CEO. ?While holiday jobs are usually temporary, this is great news for struggling families and others who have had problems finding work.?

The BBB offers the following advice for job hunters this holiday season:

Start your job search earlier rather than later. Retail, shipping, restaurants and catering companies are common sources of seasonal employment. This is the time for job hunters to determine which job suits them best, identify companies they?d like to work for and then begin submitting applications and resumes.
Work where you shop. Try to identify seasonal employment opportunities at? businesses where you shop. You will already be familiar with the company and its products, and discounts available to employees can mean significant savings when shopping for gifts. Discounts can range from 20-40 percent for seasonal employees.
Put your best foot forward. Even if you are just picking up applications at stores in the mall, dress neatly and be prepared for an interview. This includes being familiar with the company?s brand and products. Retail job hunters need to focus on impressing potential employers with their customer service skills because they may be dealing with stressed-out shoppers, long check-out lines and holiday returns.
Be flexible. Full-time employees usually have first choice on preferred hours and shifts. CLEVELAND (AP) ? American Greetings Corp. said Wednesday that a group led by its CEO and chief operating officer wants to buy the company and take it private in a deal that values it at about $581 million.

The Cleveland-based greeting card company's shares jumped 15 percent on the news.

American Greetings, whose brands also include Carlton Cards, Recycled Paper Greetings and Papyrus, said its board received the proposal from Chief Executive Zev Weiss and his brother, President and Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Weiss, on Tuesday.

The group, which also includes other investors and members of the executives' families, wants to acquire all of the company's common stock that it doesn't currently own for $17.18 per share.?That is a 20 percent premium over American Greetings' Tuesday closing stock price.

Based on the company's about 33.8 million outstanding shares, the offer values American Greetings at $580.7 million.

American Greetings said it expects its board to form a special committee of independent directors to consider the proposal. The company said it doesn't expect to make any further comments about the offer until a deal is struck or it rejects the bid.

American Greetings was founded over 100 years ago and went public in the 1950s. Members of the Weiss family currently make up a large part of its senior management. In addition to the brothers, their father, Mory Weiss, serves as the company's chairman, and Erwin Weiss, their uncle, is its senior vice president for specialty business.

In their letter to the company's board, the Weiss brothers said taking the company private will allow it to "return to its roots." While they have not secured financing, they said that they're confident they will be able to.

In June, American Greetings said its fiscal first-quarter profit dropped 78 percent, dragged down by charges related to the bankruptcy of Britain's Clinton Cards PLC. Total revenue fell 3 percent to $393.1 million. The company is scheduled to release second-quarter results Friday.

American Greetings had acquired about 400 Clinton Card stores earlier in June, along with the namesake brand.

The U.K. greeting card company is one of American Greeting's biggest customers, but ran into financial trouble. It had about 750 stores before being placed under administration last month.

In heavy morning trading, shares of American Greetings rose 15 percent, or $2.14, to $16.48, after peaking at $17.10 earlier in the day. The stock is down about 24 percent from its 52-week high of $21.68, reached a year ago.

1) I need to "freely" move around where I'm not. There are lots of situations where I would want this. However the situational awareness of these things is very poor. I drove one around and ended up rolling around the Y-Combinator offices without knowing it. For a tour of a place, office, factory, photos and handheld video would be preferable. (It's very difficult to "look around" with these thing. turning is slow.)

2) I don't need to touch anything. This is sort of the breaker. If I don't need to touch anything, why not just teleconference? Yeah, teleconferences kind of stink, but they do work. (And I can screw off during the parts that don't concern me. Try doing that in person!) If I actually need to do things then I need to be there in person with my arms and hands and fingers.

3) Movement is completely unrestricted where I need to be. Doors are all automatic. No stairs. No elevators.

4) Someone has the money to spend on these. They're expensive. People tend to abuse them, which makes them a maintenance problem.

5) No one cares about the Uncanny Valley. These things are deep in it and people react not positively to them. People hit the Emergency stop button to make the telepresence go away, people sit their drinks on them. Or push them around, pick them up. Drop them. Or just ignore them. People don't react to them like they're people. And there's really no way in the near future to get them out of this valley.

The closest I get for this is a factory tour in China. (For people who live a long distance from China.) But frankly if I need to take a factory tour I have the money to do it, and it would be worth my time to fly there and do it in person.

For anything else it seems like "Skype on a stick" is more than good enough. Does anyone have a legitimate (ie: not "it's cool!") use case for telepresence bots like this?

NEW YORK (AP) ? Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi said freedom of expression must be used responsibly in a speech Tuesday to the Clinton Global Initiative in New York that hinted at looming tensions in the newly-democratic nation.

Morsi, a key figure of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, repeated several times that he was the "first, democratically elected, civilian president of Egypt" and earned applause by asking his audience to "see a new Egypt."

"I never imagined this moment," Morsi said. "We really have a new state in Egypt."

That state has faced a chaotic political climate since last year's mass protests brought down Egypt's aging dictator Hosni Mubarak.

Egypt, now governed by the conservative Muslim Brotherhood, has tussled with military officials and democracy activists over the future of the Arab world's most populous country.

Morsi called for limits on free speech, without providing details, saying the violent protests over an anti-Islam video required "some reflection." The protests have killed dozens of people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, since they began last week.

"We must acknowledge the importance of freedom of expression," he said. "We must also recognize that such freedom comes with responsibilities, especially when it comes with serious implications for international peace and stability."

His speech at the annual gala of former President Bill Clinton's foundation followed a Monday-night meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton that sought to repair ties that were strained severely after Egyptian demonstrators overran the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.

Morsi insisted that all Egyptians enjoyed equal rights after the lecture's moderator ? Bill Clinton ? asked about the rights of women and the country's large Christian minority.

In the past, Morsi has said he does not believe Christians or women can serve as the country's leaders, based on his conservative interpretation of Islam.

Morsi called for a shakeup of global organizations like the U.N., saying they had to be more democratic ? a frequent cry of regional powers who resent the Security Council's permanent five members: the U.S., Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom.

Morsi appeared to single out Syria's backers ? Russia and China ? and Israel for criticism.

"I can't simply watch the blood that is being shed in Syria, or the children starving in Gaza, and claim that our model of global governance works," Morsi said.

Israel maintains a blockade on the impoverished Gaza Strip, which is ruled by the militant Hamas organization.

Morsi acknowledged the vast challenges his country faces ? high unemployment, a crippled infrastructure, sputtering economy and unchecked violence ? but said he remains patriotic and faithful.

"As an Egyptian, I know there is no limit to what humans can accomplish when people come together for a peaceful purpose," he said. "As a Muslim, I know God helps."
