OUYA partners with Square Enix, names Final Fantasy III as launch title

We've been saying for a while now that a large deal of the success of Kickstarter blockbuster OUYA will hinge on the console's game selection. News just got a fair bit brighter on that front -- particularly for RPG fans. The company announced via its Kickstarter page (as per usual) that it has partnered with Square Enix. The first fruits of that burgeoning relationship will be Final Fantasy III, making the game a launch title for the console. The company is promising that the title will be "updated to exploit OUYA's high-definition resolution in glorious graphic detail" -- and, as is OUYA's M.O., players will be getting a free demo of the game. Oh, and for those keeping track, the product's Kickstarter page is currently at a mind-boggling $5,820,345 with eight days to go.

Big week - Adoption.com Forums

We have a big week ahead of us! Curly and her mom have their "goodbye" visit with the therapist on Wednesday. It isn't really goodbye since we are planning on a very open adoption but they are using this visit for mom to tell Curly, in her own words, her reasons for her decisions and to give her some more of her background story. They plan on using our life book and mom's photo albums to help her tell the story as the therapist's supervisor writes down what mom says. She is then going to print it out to go in Curly's life book. Any specific questions you feel should be put out there for Curly to "ask" mom? We are supposed to write some down on pieces of paper and Curly is going to color them and give them to mom during the session.

Then Friday is our mediation with dad. We have our fingers and toes crossed that he shows up. If he surrenders we are looking at a September/ October adoption date. If he doesn't we are looking at a November/December proof hearing to terminate his rights and then 3-4 months for the judges decision and THEN adoption somewhere in 2013. Dad hasn't seen Curly since January when he had his bonding eval that went horrible for him. Before that he hadn't seen her in 3-4 months and before that he was in prison for an extended period with no contact. He was free to come to visits whenever he wanted, he just never did. Please let him care enough to show up, sign the papers and for once do the right thing for Curly!!

The Reason Why Your Email Address Has an @ in It [Email]

Email is something many of us have only been using for the past 20 years, but its roots go back much much further than that. The earliest traces of email even date back to the 1960s. And according to Wired, computer engineer Ray Tomlinson was responsible for many of email's earliest innovations, including the use of @ in email addresses. More »

GM testing pedestrian detection system powered by WiFi Direct (video)

GM testing pedestrian detection system powered by WiFi Direct

Car makers have been peddling wireless pedestrian avoidance systems almost as long as there have been automobiles. (We believe one of the earliest was called the "side view mirror.") GM's new experiment though, differs from other implementations by skipping out on the 3G, cameras and radar -- instead going for a model built around WiFi Direct. The peer-to-peer 802.11 standard hasn't exactly set the world on fire, but the WiFi Alliance is diligently tweaking the platform and apparently GM thinks its a perfect match for connecting cars, cyclists and pedestrians to each other. Unlike 3G-based systems, there's little lag between locating and identifying bikes or people crossing the street since the signal doesn't have to be bounced off a satellite. It also has a leg up on radar detection since WiFi can be a two way pipeline -- alerting someone out for a stroll of an oncoming vehicle. Of course, it will be some time before anything like this actually makes it into a production vehicle. But, in the meantime, you can check out the PR and video after the break.

Looking for a good rp.

Hello everyone. I've just recently come back into the roleplay circuit after a long hiatus and I'm looking to jump right in. I have extensive roleplay experience and am a moderate to advanced writer. I like most genres, but my favorite is medieval fantasy. However, if you have a good idea for an rp send me a link and I'll look at it. I'll do just about anything as long as I can get into it and it has a descent plot behind it. Thank you for your time. I look forward to roleplaying with you guys.

There is a place within each of us where we cannot escape the truth; where virtue sits as judge. To admit the truth of our actions is to go before that court, where process is irrelevant. Good and evil are intents, and intent is without excuse.

Meal Planning....A New Family Perspective! - blog*spot

I used to be such an organised Mum when it came to planning and cooking meals...then i had the twins, gave up full time work?and became a stay at home Mum. Sounds like it should be the other way around doesn't it? You would think i would become more organised and have more time to plan and cook meals now that i am at home and not rushing in the door at 5.30pm! Well that's what i expected too but so far it doesn't seem to working out that way....and it's time to change that because this disorganisation is not only bugging the perfectionist list maker in me...it's costing us money we can't afford!

When i worked i used to sit down each weekend and plan out our meals with great care, recipe books strewn everywhere,?then off to the weekly shop clutching my little list for groceries, meat and veg.No deviation was accepted!?I then spent an afternoon baking for school and work lunches and often even made up some great little salads or sandwiches ready to go for the following week. I only had a teenager during those?organised days....?then i had twins and things started to slip.....well that's my excuse anyway.

It has taken me some time to get a new family rhythm going....i've never had twin babies...now toddlers to fit in around my day, i've never been a stay at home Mum before, i've never not crossed everything off my to do list each day before heading home from an office...I've never before lived in tracksuit pants and felt grateful when i get a shower in a 24 hour period....by myself that is! So it has taken a little getting used to and a now i think the time has come to realise we are a family of 5 now...not 3 and things are indeed very different...and they won't be going back to how they were before so it's up to me to set some new strategies in place!

To be fair to myself i do now make a lot of things that i used to buy before and this takes extra time....i make yoghurt and washing liquid, i try to keep a reasonable vegetable patch going and the chooks fed so that they in turn feed us with their glorious eggs and i like to embrace my old inner childcare teacher self and have fun playing and making messes with the toddler twosome.?I do still bake and i always try to have a home cooked meal on the table every night but to be honest the 'chore' of it and the monotony has been wearing me down.

From 4pm here it gets messy...there is lots of whining and leg pulling not to mention a few tantrums and squabbles....and then Miss teen arrives home from school and i need to give some undivided attention there as well (or become a taxi depending on the social calendar of the week...hers' not mine!)And then a little part of me gives up on the planned dinner and it becomes something it wasn't meant to be or we turn to takeaway which is hard on my purse and my hips. I do try to prepare what i can during the twins nap time most days but i have so much to get done during naptime that i often get a little resentful when i have to spend it cooking or prepping...i know that sounds awful...what mother resents having to feed their family? Well, that's how i am often feeling at the moment unfortunately.

I have been attempting to meal plan to try and make things easier and get back to where i used to be but it tends to be scribbled on the back of scrap paper or across the fridge whiteboard which also holds the shopping list and thus often becomes combined prompting me to wonder why i put 'porcupine balls' on the shopping list...and then i remember i was supposed to be following a plan this week!

So i have decided i need to go back to using a folder with some plastic sleeves, a meal plan and shopping list for each week. By keeping them in a folder i can also look back over the weeks to gain some inspiration?from those. What i need to do differently to how i used to plan though is think ahead to some shortcuts which recognise that the days are full and i don't have as much time to prepare and cook the way i used to....again....i know it sounds odd when i used to work all day but perhaps i was just more prepared than i remember (and we didn't need to eat by 5.30pm!). I also need to incorporate more meals that i can adapt or pull bits out of to make meals for the toddler twosome as i feel like i am making 3 different meals each night at the moment and it is leading to mini meltdowns (from me) that aren't too pretty i'm afraid!

So for now i think i need to go back to some quick, easy and wholesome meals that i can also try with 2 yr olds. I'll save some of our old spicy favourites for the weekends as a treat for the big people and stop trying to make different meals that keep everyone happy. I need to accept that for now i just don't have the time to cook some of the more labour intensive meals that i used to do (i also no longer have a nice relaxing glass of white while cooking said meal....doesn't seem to fit with my new twin mummy role anymore apparently?....) I'm going to try and use the slowcooker more as i love the feeling of putting it on in the morning and not worrying for the rest of day, i'm going to try and do a little more prep at nights (which should be easier as i shall have 'the plan' to follow!!!)instead of using precious nap times and i'm going to have some back up frozen casseroles ready in case of those just plain awful days when i haven't been able to get to the toilet by myself let alone cook anything!
I am also going to keep my fingers crossed (and probably bribe to be honest) that the toddler twosome start developing an appetite and interest in a wider range of family foods and that Ruby's sensory issues with food miraculously disappear (yeah, i know that's not going to happen....goodness it's hard to keep positive about it sometimes though.....i really hope she isn't going to just eat yellow, crunchy things into her teen years because that's going to be awkward!).

OK...i have a plan in place now and to be even more efficient i am going to download and print out one of the fab meal plan lists i have been seeing all over Pinterest rather than spending the time typing or writing up my own. Here are some of my favourites so far!

Project Girl...Capsule Menu Planning

Bold Turquoise...Meal Plan Binder

seven thirty three...weekly meal planner

I also get lots of inspiration from Amie over at Triple T Mum? as she has twins and a toddler under 3 plus a teen and she does fabulous meal plans each week that i always read and which?have me thinking (each week....)that?i need to get myself organised with meal planning...no more excuses!!!

Next week i shall share the folder i have made up and how week 1 has gone. This weeks goal is to stick to the plan...see what works and what doesn't, try out a few different recipes instead of the same old rotation of ones i know by heart (please tell me i am not the only one that does that!!)and?also?to instigate some timesavers.
I'll let you know how i go.....time for me to embrace this new family rhythm instead of constantly fighting it and wishing for a time that is no longer relevant to our lifestyle. I have visited so many friendly blogs that have wonderful tips for meal planning each week and it is always such an inspiration...if you have any tips (or?helpful blog posts)?for me or others regarding meal planning for a family (especially with toddlers!) i would love you to leave them in the comments for us all to share.

I am also collecting lots of great ideas on my Pinterest Organisation Board?if you'd like some inspiration too!

I truly need all the help i can get at the moment as i want cooking for my family to become something i enjoy again...not a chore that stresses me and has me snapping at everyone at the end of each day...wish me luck friends...a new journey awaits!!!

?

Warm Wishes

Looking At The Reasons You Might Need Dallas Pest Control Services

The home that is troubled by pests can be uncomfortable ans unhealthy. Making sure you take the steps to keep your free of pests is important. While there are several Dallas pest control companies available for helping you take care of this issue, making sure you choose the best one is necessary for your house to be pest free.

Parents with children or pet owners may worry about the traditional chemicals used in pesticides being harmful. Because of the side effects of some products used to kill bugs and rodents, many companies are finding that green ingredients work just as well. The greatest benefit of green pesticides is no harmful effects come with using them. You can find out more about these kinds of products by talking to pesticide experts.

Many homeowners deal with the onslaught of ants. When you can not leave food or drink uncovered because of ants in your kitchen, it is time to call a professional. In some cases, an entire colony can live under house. Indoor areas of the house over a colony can experience thousands of them trailing throughout the whole house. Some people may be allergic to fire ants and could have a serious allergic reaction if stung by one ant. Taking out ants before they grow larger in numbers starts by contacting professional exterminators

Nobody likes to think of cockroaches being in their kitchen. However, kitchens and bathes are prime areas for these disgusting bugs. Roaches carry diseases that can be harmful to your family. By calling professionals trained to get of these bugs, you greatly lower the risk of anyone in your family becoming sick. Roaches leave behind filth that can allow the contraction of serious diseases.

Rodents can cause damage in your home in several ways. These creatures chew up important documents and tear up expensive wallpaper. However, the worst part of mice or rats moving into your home is the collection of diseases they bring as well. The droppings and urine left behind on your counters or floors is a serious health risk. Make sure you hire someone with experience to rid your house of rodents.

Finding the company you can count for ridding your house of pests is important. Learn from other families you know about the companies they may have hired in the past. Check out the internet and read customer testimonials. Taking the time to research the backgrounds of companies allows you to make better choices about them. Look at the Better Business Bureau listings for comments made about companies you may be researching.

Some services for helping you to stay free of pests can be ongoing at your home. You might consider the aerial misting system for outdoor use in the prevention of mosquitoes. Maybe you need constant protection from termites. Signing up for future scheduled treatments is a wise idea as well. These are services you should inquire about at the company you are considering. Some companies do not provide these types of more specialized services.

Choosing the best Dallas pest control services also means you are choosing to live in a cleaner and healthier home environment. This is a choice important to families with children. Take the time to find out how your home can always be free of pests.

You can find a complete review of the benefits of hiring a pest extermination contractor and information about a reputable Dallas pest control company at http://www.berrettpestbedbugandtermiteremoval.com/about now.

Out of our inner city backyards: Re-scaling urban environmental ...

By Social Science and Medicine

Publication year: 2012Source:Social Science & Medicine, Volume 75, Issue 7Jeffrey R. Masuda, Cheryl Teelucksingh, Tara Zupancic, Alexis Crabtree, Rebecca Haber, Emily Skinner, Blake Poland, Jim Frankish, Mara Fridell In this paper, we report the results of a three-year research project (2008?2011) that aimed to identify urban environmental health inequities using a photography-mediated qualitative approach adapted for comparative neighbourhood-level assessment. The project took place in Vancouver, Toronto, and Winnipeg, Canada and involved a total of 49 inner city community researchers who compared environmental health conditions in numerous neighbourhoods across each city. Using the social determinants of health as a guiding framework, community researchers observed a wide range of differences in health-influencing private and public spaces, including sanitation services, housing, parks and gardens, art displays, and community services. The comparative process enabled community researchers to articulate in five distinct ways how such observable conditions represented system level inequities

Ramirez follows Sanchez out of Miami

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Marlins are trading stars, just like they did following their championships in 1997 and 2003. Team president David Samson says this exodus is different.

"A fire sale I guess comes after a World Series victory," he said Wednesday. "I don't know how you would call it a fire sale to trade players of team that's underperforming so spectacularly. So for us, we are just doing everything we can to win more games."

Former NL batting champion Hanley Ramirez became the latest player to leave, traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday with left-handed reliever Randy Choate for right-hander Nathan Eovaldi and minor league pitcher Scott McGough.

On Monday, the Marlins sent pitcher Anibal Sanchez and infielder Omar Infante to the Detroit Tigers for pitching prospect Jacob Turner and two minor leaguers.

"When we put the team together, none of us had any idea that we would be underperforming en masse," Samson said during a telephone interview. "It's not just one player. It is all players. So one of the hardest things to do is look in the mirror and say that we didn't get it right, and that's what we did. We want to restructure because we want to win games."

As the team prepared to move into its new $634 million retractable-roof ballpark, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria hired Ozzie Guillen as manager last fall and committed $191 million in a five-day span during the offseason to sign All-Stars Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Heath Bell. The team agreed to star in a Showtime reality series, "The Franchise."

In their colorful new uniforms, the Marlins were 31-23 through June 3, just percentage points out of first place, then lost 17 of their next 20 games. They are 45-53, 13? games out of first place and just a half-game above last.

Samson said president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest approached Loria and Samson after the Marlins lost two of three at the even-worse Chicago Cubs last week.

"He didn't feel as though things were trending properly for us to keep the team as is and make the playoffs," Samson said.

Miami might not be done, with pitcher Josh Johnson and Bell also trade possibilities before Tuesday's deadline to make swaps without waivers.

"Be careful with what you think, what you say, and how you smile because you might be next," Guillen said. "That's the way it has to go if you don't perform. That's business."

After winning the 1997 World Series, the Marlins jettisoned high-priced stars Moises Alou, Kevin Brown, Al Leiter, Robb Nen, Jeff Conine and Devon White. They won the Series again in 2003, then allowed Ivan Rodriguez, Ugueth Urbina, Derrek Lee, Mark Redman, Braden Looper and Juan Encarnacion to depart.

The 28-year-old Ramirez is hitting .249 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs after going 2 for 4 with a triple, RBI single and walk in the Dodgers' 3-2, 12-inning loss at St. Louis. That's a steep decline from his big season in 2009, when he hit a league-leading .342 with 24 homers and 106 RBIs.

"I am sad to go," Ramirez said as he left the Marlins. "This will be always be my home, but it will just be a little different."

A three-time All-Star, he shifted from shortstop to third base this season to make room for Reyes.

"It's sad to see Hanley go to another team," Reyes said. "We developed a great relationship. I feel he was one of my real good friends on the team."

After losing in Ramirez's first game, Los Angeles remained 2 1-2 games behind NL West-leading San Francisco. The Dodgers followed a 32-15 start by losing 31 of their next 52.

"You never know what a change of scenery will do for somebody," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said. "We see him as one of our main guys."

After filing for bankruptcy in 2011, the Dodgers were bought from Frank McCourt for $2 billion on May 1 in a move that led to Stan Kasten becoming team president.

Ramirez has a $15 million salary this year and is owed $15.5 million next year and $16 million in 2013.

"We're not going to let money stand in the way of a true baseball deal. And if we can improve the club, the financial piece of it will always be there," Colletti said. "It's kind of a liberating thing because we're able to make a baseball trade. We found a player that we really like, that we think can add to our lineup and at the same time show the guys who have been busting their tail for the last three months that we acknowledge how hard they've played and to get them the support that we can. It's good to not have to worry too much about what it's going to cost you from a financial standpoint. This (ownership) group is in to win."

Ramirez started at third base on Wednesday night but will shift to his old position as soon as he is comfortable. Dee Gordon is on the disabled list with a torn ligament in his right thumb that could sideline him until mid-August and is batting only .229 with 17 RBIs.

"I look at it as he has a clean slate," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Anything that's happened in his past has nothing to do with me, has nothing to do with the Dodgers. It's basically moving forward."

Choate, a 36-year-old lefty, is 0-0 with one save and a 2.49 ERA in 44 games. Eovaldi, a 22-year-old righty, is 1-6 with a 4.15 ERA. He is to make his Marlins debut on Saturday against San Diego.

In addition to saving the money owed Ramirez, the Marlins cut Sanchez's $8 million salary.

"The message to our fans is we signed so many players and had such a big payroll not for any other reason than to win games," Samson said, "and it wasn't happening enough."

The Lions announced on Monday that they?ll be terminating the contract of cornerback Aaron Berry.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Lions also officially waived Berry on Monday.

As a result, all other teams have the ability to submit a waivers claim for Berry?s contract by 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

Undrafted in 2010, Berry is due to earn a base salary of $465,000 in 2012, the final year of his current contract.? Thus, it?s a low risk, financially, to add him to the roster.? (From a P.R. standpoint, it could be a problem.)

And as we scan the standings for teams that may be interested, one that jumps out is the Buffalo Bills.? New defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt recruited Berry out of high school to attend Pitt.

Of course, if Wannstedt isn?t willing to give one of his former college players a second (or, technically, third) chance, maybe that tells the rest of the league all it needs to know.

The Vikings have a clear need at the cornerback position, but it would be very difficult for the Vikings to justify adding another problem child to the mix, even if they ask Governor Mark Dayton to come up with the formal explanation for the move.

Since 2009, BandPage has focused 100% on building Facebook apps for?musicians in need of a home after the fall of Myspace. But that was just the opening act.

Hamilton blames 'cruel luck' for Hockenheim fiasco

p>Hockenheim (Germany) July 23 (IANS/CMC) McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton has cursed his ?cruel luck? after a puncture and then gearbox problems forced him to retire in the Formula One German Grand Prix won by Ferrari?s Fernando Alonso.

The 27-year-old Hamilton started from the fourth row but picked up a puncture on the second lap which saw him slip back down the field, CMC reports.

He eventually limped out on the 58th lap as Alonso went on to take his third win of the season.

?My second-lap puncture was incredibly unfortunate. There was debris scattered across the full width of the track and I didn?t have any option other than to drive straight through it,? said Hamilton.

?What?s more frustrating is that, at the time, I was the eighth car through - so to be the one to get the puncture is just cruel luck. It was immediately clear that my car didn?t feel the same after the puncture.

?However, after a few laps, I was able to adapt my driving style, and the car had good pace during the middle stint.?

His teammate Jenson Button finished third but was promoted to second after World champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull was handed a 20-second penalty and demoted to third.

With the failure, Hamilton slipped to fifth in the drivers? championship, 62 points adrift of leader Alonso with 154.

Enabling Performance Management Part Two: Strategy to Execution ...

From Malcolm Faulkner

Corporate performance is measured?in financial years. However, strategic plans more often span multiple years while containing shorter-term targets that map to the performance sought in the current financial year. The development of a long-term strategy might take anywhere from six to nine months for a large enterprise. Once in place, the annual planning that precedes each financial year is a much?shorter, affair (one to two months).

?Regardless of whether we?re embarking on a new strategy or tweaking an existing one, the lifecycle?looks much the same. There are essentially three phases in the strategy-to-execution lifecycle:

  • Step 1: Strategize and prioritize?? strategy is developed and set
  • Step 2: Plan and execute??? financial and operational?plans and budgets are established
  • Step 3: Model and optimize??? performance is analyzed, different scenarios are tested, and information for the next step is collected

Report and monitor isn?t listed as a phase here (although some models show it as a separate step), as it?s ongoing ? we never stop monitoring!

Fig 1 : Strategy to Execution Lifecycle

Strategy-to-Execution Lifecycle in Practice

  • Prior to the next of strategic planning cycle, the finance department (primarily) is tasked with gathering a ton of information to update the strategy
  • Executives disappear on a retreat to plan a new strategy or revise the existing one
  • Business units develop their own plans for supporting and aligning their activities to the corporate objectives defined in the top-level plan
  • Later on, finance develops the budget that determines the next year?s financial targets and spending on operations, capital investments, headcount, and discretionary (strategic) programs
  • Periodically throughout the year, teams conduct strategic and operational?reviews to compare performance against budget and take action or adjust the strategy as appropriate
  • Towards the end of the year (or soon after), HR launches the annual performance review process, where employees and managers update objectives?and performance reviews,? and bonuses, promotions, and pay increases are decided

In the ideal world, after defining the strategic plan, companies would carry out detailed planning and budgeting and tie these plans to strategic objectives. After all, if you don?t know what the objectives?are, how can you really determine?how to allocate discretionary spending? This might seem obvious, but it often isn?t the case.

A decade ago, Drs. Kaplan & Norton?found that 60 percent of organizations fail to effectively link budgets to strategy, and it remains an issue for many companies today. So, it?s not surprising that little consideration is given to longer-term strategic objectives, which tend to be more of an afterthought than an integral element in the planning process. There?s nothing wrong with the model. The problem is that even with a good strategy in place, organizations resort to business as usual, with tactical challenges and short-term financial targets absorbing all the time and resources. Hence, the effort to meet near-term targets comes at the expense?of long-range objectives.

Financial planning and budgeting is an arduous task; and given that finance is overworked, it?s not much of a revelation that they don?t have the time to develop a more strategy-focused approach. This alone is justification to make financial planning more efficient in software applications.

While many organizations are taking this first step, many stop there and don?t make further investments to improve efficiency and effectiveness in peripheral finance processes ? namely the strategize and prioritize and model & optimize phases that should feed into and out of planning and budgeting. This shortsightedness is a mistake. Organizations would do well to broaden their horizons when it comes to enterprise performance management applications and not limit themselves to only making financial planning more efficient.

In part three of this series, I?ll discuss best practices in developing key performance indicators

Attachment Parenting International | Extra Pair of Eyes

Play MatesI cannot underscore the importance of a supportive spouse, partner, or mother?s helper when you?re a work-from-home parent of a mobile baby or preverbal toddler.

Just this week, my seven-month-old son has learned to climb the few steps between the family room, where my office is located, and the kitchen. I had hoped the steps would serve as a barrier between the two rooms for a little while longer, since the gap is too wide for a baby gate. After all, he wasn?t even rolling over consistently only a month ago. In just the last four weeks, he not only learned how to roll over but also how to scoot, sit up, and pull himself to a standing position. I?m envisioning him leaping off the couch in a couple months. I hope I?m not right.

As such, I?m finding it a little difficult to do certain types of projects without a second person keeping track of the baby ? projects that require deep thought for more than the couple minutes it takes for my baby to cross the room and scale the steps before I need to get up to fetch him. Understandably, his five- and four-year-old sisters do not want this responsibility ? and they shouldn?t have to, anyway ? although I am grateful when they play in the family room, as the baby stays put when his sisters are near.

So, these projects have been relegated to mostly overnight hours, when baby is asleep, or when my husband is home. Certainly, my husband can?t be on danger watch every moment he?s home, as he needs to do things like mow the yard and work on the cars, so I try to work it out with him a couple days in advance so he can adjust his to-do list for the week. But as a parent, he does share the responsibility.

It doesn?t mean your spouse or partner isn?t being reasonable if he or she doesn?t want to watch the kids while you work every night. It?s one of those things you have to work out. For some families, it works out better to hire a mother?s helper than to rely on a spouse or partner, just because they?re so tired after a long day?s work themselves. But that might make you feel resentful. Both of you need to voice your expectations and concerns regarding your work-home situation, and find a solution that works for both of you.

When my girls were young, being only a year apart, I hired a mother?s helper during the day, as working with two babies at home is a bigger deal than with one baby. Or maybe, I think it?s easier now because I?ve finally got the hang of it? Either way, I found a mother?s helper to be critical when I was working on tough projects. I requested a mother?s helper ? usually my mom, although I have a grandmotherly neighbor and a teen from church who also like the job ? as needed, and basically she served the purpose of an extra pair of eyes. I still cuddled with my kids, fed them, and changed their diapers, but when I needed an extra minute to finish my thought, my mother?s helper would fill in the gap. She would also prepare meals, throw in the laundry, pick up the toys, and do other odds-and-ends so that when I took a break from the project, I could spend it giving undivided attention to my kids rather than on some chore. While she was here, my babies were always in the same room with me.

I know some work-from-home parents who do use a nanny or babysitter or put their children in daycare while they work, and that?s OK. I also know of some single parents who are able to work from home without hiring help. That?s amazing! But, it doesn?t mean you?re any less of a parent if you do need an extra pair of eyes, or hands. A mother?s helper, or at least help from your parenting partner, may be just what you need to balance work with home while keeping your attachment bond as a priority.

Shooting victims brought together by love of comics

(Reuters) - They included a sandwich maker, a cryptography expert, college students and a property appraiser. Some loved wrestling, others sportscasting, or visiting the zoo.

The 12 people killed early on Friday morning in a multiplex in Aurora, Colorado, came from all walks of life. Many were avid comic book fans who had eagerly awaited the midnight premiere of 'The Dark Knight Rises.'

The victims ranged in age from six-year-old Veronica Moser-Sullivan, who had just learned how to swim, to 51-year-old Gordon Cowden. Most were in their 20s.

Jessica Ghawi, 24, had spent the day cajoling friends to join her at the theater. She wouldn't accept excuses from those who said they'd be too tired for work after a midnight showing. "Of course we're seeing Dark Knight," she tweeted. She wouldn't take no for an answer; she was a "redheaded Texan spitfire." Sure enough, she had her way; just before midnight she was tweeting impatiently that there were still 20 minutes to wait.

Alex Sullivan couldn't wait for the movie, either. This was a big weekend for him: He'd be celebrating his first wedding anniversary on Sunday. And Friday was his 27th birthday. The Batman premiere was a present to himself.

"OMG COUNTING down till it start cant wait going to be the best birthday ever," he wrote on his Facebook page.

The Aurora multiplex was crowded for the event. Denver had been sweltering under 100-degree (high 30s Celsius) temperatures for days. The theater offered an air-conditioned respite. And the crowd was primed for fun.

Large groups of friends came in together. Some comic-book aficionados wore costumes. Others brought their kids; six-year-old Veronica was there with her mom, and she wasn't the only one allowed to stay up way past bedtime for the treat of watching Batman on the big screen. One young couple brought their infant son and their 4-year-old daughter.

ANGUISH

Anticipation turned to anguish when the gunman burst into the darkened theater, set off two smoke bombs and let loose a barrage of bullets.

Matt McQuinn, 27, was fatally shot as he dived to cover his girlfriend, Samantha Yowler, trying to shield her from the bullets, according to Robert Scott, a lawyer representing both families. McQuinn and Yowler worked together at Target. His Facebook page had a picture of them together, a close-up with a teddy bear.

Friends of Alexander Teves, who also died in the shooting, posted memories of him online; one recalled that he loved Spiderman and did a hilarious impersonation of Gollum from the "Lord of the Rings" movies. Teves, 24, was a basketball buff. There's a video of him on YouTube participating in a fan contest during halftime of a college basketball game. Given one chance to make a three-point shot, he nailed it.

"One of the best men I ever knew," one of his friends wrote of Teves.

Similar praise poured in for Rebecca Ann Wingo, 32. Her Facebook page showcased her vibrant spirit: She liked camping, traveling, bowling and listening to local bands. She worked in a restaurant. She spoke Chinese.

The Denver Post quoted from the Facebook page of her father, Steve Hernandez: "I lost my daughter yesterday to a mad man, my grief right now is inconsolable..."

Two military men were among the dead. John Larimer, 27, was a petty officer in the Navy who specialized in cryptology. "He was an outstanding shipmate," his commanding officer, Commander Jeffrey Jakuboski, said in a statement released by the Navy. "He will be missed by all who knew him."

Air Force Staff Sergeant Jesse Childress, 29, was killed as well. A reservist, Childress had been called to active duty as a cyber systems operator, stationed at nearby Buckley Air Force Base, the military said.

Ghawi, the 24-year-old redhead, was an aspiring sportscaster who adored professional hockey. On Saturday, journalists who had worked with her shared their shock and anguish online. They also called attention to a blog she had written earlier this summer, after a "weird feeling" in her gut had prompted her to exit a food court in Toronto minutes before a gunman opened fire, killing a shopper just steps from where she had been sitting.

"God bless you, Jessica. You are a beautiful soul with an infectious smile," posted Nate Lundy, a sportscaster with a Denver radio station where Ghawi had worked as an intern. "Miss you so much."

'MISS HER FOREVER'

Other victims included Alexander Boik, 18, a talented artist planning to enter an arts college in the fall, the Denver Post reported. Jonathan Blunk, 26, who was described by NBC News as a father of two young children and a former Navy sailor, also died in the massacre.

So did Micayla Medek, 23, a community-college student and self-described "sandwich artist" at Subway.

Medek had gone to the midnight showing with several friends in her hometown of Aurora. One of those friends called her house around 1 a.m. with news her parents could barely process.

There had been guns, the friend said. A shooting. Medek had called out "I've been shot!" She had fallen to the ground. Her friends saw her fall, heard her cough, tried to help, but were hustled out of the theater by authorities, her aunt, Jenny Zakovich, recounted.

For nearly 20 hours, the family tried to find Micayla.

Her older sister, Amanda, drove from hospital to hospital with Micayla's photo, desperate to find someone who might have seen her. Her father, Greg, pleaded for information from authorities who had set up a staging area at a local high school.

"They searched and searched and searched and searched for her," Zakovich said.

It wasn't until Friday night that authorities knocked at their door with confirmation that Micayla had died in the theater.

Greg Medek, exhausted and depleted, said he took comfort in knowing that Micayla shared his strong Christian faith. She was a hard worker, he said, a good girl, a happy girl, who "had a heart for people."

"She was the best part of my life," Micayla's father said. "You couldn't have asked for a better kid. It was a privilege to have her."

His voice broke as he added: "I'm going to miss her forever."
