SRINAGAR, India (AP) ? A fire destroyed a revered Muslim shrine in Indian-administered Kashmir on Monday, prompting anti-government protests by residents angered over what they said was a slow response by firefighters.
At least 30 protesters and 10 policemen were injured in clashes, police said. Shops and businesses remained closed.
The cause of the fire at the 200-year-old shrine of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani in the heart of Srinagar city was not immediately known. The blaze started from the roof shortly after morning prayers and quickly engulfed the wooden structure, a police official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
The 11th century saint, popularly known worldwide as Ghaus-e-Azam, is buried in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. The shrine, which held his relics, has served as an important center of Islamic and spiritual teachings in Kashmir.
"The holy relics are safe and have been retrieved," the officer said.
Police and paramilitary soldiers laid razor wire and erected steel barricades on roads leading to the shrine where thousands of men and women had gathered, many of them wailing and crying.
Scores of firefighters tried to douse the flames, but protesters threw stones at them and burned a fire truck, saying their response was slow. Thousands of people later crowded nearby streets, chanting anti-India slogans and demanding Kashmir's freedom from Indian rule.
Clashes erupted in at least four other neighborhoods in Srinagar, with protesters throwing stones at police and officers responding by firing bullets into the air and using tear gas, the officer said.
Authorities appealed for calm and ordered a probe into the fire.
"It's an unfortunate incident. The probe will be completed within a few days," Law Minister Ali Mohammed Sagar told reporters in Srinagar.
But separatists rejected the government probe and instead called for an independent investigation. They also called for a general strike on Tuesday.
"It needs to be thoroughly probed as the custodians of the shrine informed us that the fire started at at least three places in the shrine," said Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a top separatist leader. "We've no faith in government probes. They always use these tactics to becalm public anger."
Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan and is claimed by both. Anti-India sentiment runs deep in the Indian-administered portion, where rebel groups have fought since 1989 for independence or merger with Pakistan.
More than 68,000 people have been killed in the uprising and subsequent Indian crackdown.

New Jersey police are trying to identify a man found wandering naked through a forested area Sunday afternoon. The man, who police said was covered in mud, couldn't provide any information about his identity or where he was coming from, NJ.com reported.
Mahwah police said they received a call around noon Sunday that a man was wandering naked through the woods off Route 202.
The man had no signs of injuries, Mahwah Chief James N. Batelli told msnbc.com, but was taken to Bergen Regional Medical Center for an evaluation.?Police found a pile of clothes nearby that may belong to the man and some paperwork from New York State, but no identifying documents were found.
The man didn't appear to have been in the forest long, Batelli said. He is relatively healthy and not malnourished, and there was only a slight hair growth on his face.
The man, who is believed to be in his late 30s or early 40s, doesn't say much and does not appear lucid, Batelli said. Police released the man's photo Sunday, but so far no one has called with any information.
After the man mentioned Ocean County to a nurse Sunday, police reached out to their counterparts there. The investigation continues, and Batelli said he hopes the man's fingerprints will yield more information.
If he is cleared medically Monday, police will bring the man for fingerprinting and submit the prints electronically, Batelli said.

A research team at Keio University has built a fun haptic virtual reality system that enables you to manipulate pictures with a rolling pin. A vertically mounted Kinect takes a 3D image that is then displayed on the projection surface. Using the rolling pin, the image can be rolled over and flattened as if it was dough -- with a series of motor cranks inside the implement to replicate the necessary feedback so you can feel what it'd be like to iron out your own face. A world full of readers is at our fingertips these days with digital publishing and global availability. With all the available information about writing and book promotion, many authors are successfully selling. You may be in a similar place, wondering what comes next.
How do you keep it going? How do you grow your readership?
To grow a garden, you prepare the soil with compost and fertilizer, till the ground, plant seeds or plants and water regularly. Once things began to grow, you need to weed and prune. I think you get the picture?there?s lots to do!
Now I don?t want to scare anyone into thinking that cultivating a readership is a lot of work. On the contrary, I want to excite you because there is so much you can do to connect with your readers and engage them.
I?ve found the easiest and quickest way to reach new readers is through offering free books. You can offer a free book as a download on your website, through Smashwords, or for 1-5 days through Kindle Select if you don?t mind being exclusive to Kindle. Even before Kindle Select, I noticed that my sales grew for all my titles when I offered a book for free.
Another quick step in building your readership is to include your links and book list in the front and back of all your books. Readers might skip the front matter, but if they enjoy your book, they?ll check out your bio, website(s), and other books at the end. Include direct links to your Amazon book pages for easy purchasing.
It?s fun to get involved online, and it?s easy to get carried away to the point of not writing. Your readers want more books, and it will make you a better writer.

There are so many ways to engage the reading community online through a blog, Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads and many other social websites. I enjoy talking to readers, book bloggers and other writers on Facebook and through my blog. Look for opportunities to join a blog hop, donate books or ebooks to another blog?s giveaway, guest blog, and celebrate others? successes with them.
I?ve posted two covers on Facebook and asked people to like their favorite. Other authors post questions and ask for help in naming a new character, town or business in their book, or for thoughts on raising a 10 year old daughter.
Fiction writers sometime wonder, what on earth do I blog about? Posting novel previews is a powerful marketing tool, but it?s difficult to keep up an interesting blog just writing about your books. My blog is a mix of posts about my writing, my passions and adventures, and encouraging posts that share personal lessons. Think about what you have to offer besides a good read. If you have a completely different topic, consider a separate blog to read new and different readers. (I keep a separate blog about book promoting since the audience is different.)
While you don?t want to spend all your time trying to engage people online, it?s also important to keep a presence. It?s better to check in every few days than to do a big dump once a week, or worse yet, just when you launch a new book. I usually spend at least a few minutes in the morning and evening on Facebook, and I write a blog post for one of my blogs a few times a month.
Your readership will naturally grow as you learn and grow as a writer. Beyond a writing group, critique partner, hired professionals and beta readers, reviews can be another useful source of feedback to improve our writing and future books. Reviews have shown me which of my romances have the most compelling couple, which evoked the most emotion, and highlighted my strengths and weaknesses.
You can learn a wealth of information by reading your reviews on Amazon and Goodreads, but I do advise against commenting, even if it?s to thank someone. Instead, check out your reviews from a learning standpoint. You can put on your marketing cap, too, and look at the things that readers love. What do readers compliment the most, and do any issues pop up in several reviews, or across several books?
Look for trends and not single comments. You can?t change your writing over every review, but if something positive or negative shows up often, it?s useful information. Reviews are a direct link to readers that show us how our end product comes across.
We?re very lucky in this day and age to be able to update published works, especially if we?ve self published. If an issue comes up in many reviews, we have the opportunity to revise it. Again, don?t rush a book to market, thinking you can fix things later, but there might be a good reason to revise a chapter, the ending, a character or some plot point that just didn?t work the way you thought it would.
Growing your readership is easier than ever with today?s publishing climate of print on demand and ebooks. Books no longer get a six month window before disappearing. They continue working for you, reaching new readers, growing your sales and your readership. Just keep believing in yourself and writing!

"Now that we are in the digital age, people get access to us not just by living near us,"?Louisiana State Representative Jeff Thompson explained when I asked him about a law he'd authored recently. The law forces registered sex offenders to identify themselves ? and explain the nature of their crimes???on social networks. ?A $1,000 fine and at least two years of prison (with hard labor) await those who fail to comply.
Thompson's law will be effective Aug. 1, and is basically an addition to existing sex offender notification laws.?Under current law, Thompson pointed out, sex offenders are required to give notice to certain individuals and organizations based on their geographic proximity. (For example, they have to notify those who reside near them, the local school district, local parks, and other places where there may be children.)
The new law?additions stipulate that any registered sex offender, "who is otherwise not prohibited from using a networking website, and who creates a profile or uses the functionality of a networking website to contact or attempt to contact other networking website users shall include in his profile for the networking website an indication that he is a sex offender or child predator and shall include notice of the crime for which he was convicted, the jurisdiction of confiction, a description of his physical characteristics as required by [the relevant laws], and his residential address."?This information must be made visible to users and visitors of the site.
The definition of a "networking website," in this context, is reasonably broad. Any site which focuses on social interaction and includes profile pages, photos, and the ability to send messages or leave comments appears to be included. This would suggest that Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and many other popular websites are covered by it. (Though the law is moot when it comes to Facebook, as?its terms of use prohibit convicted sex offenders from using the social network.)
While discussing the law with me, Thompson emphasized that it is simply a way of bringing existing laws up to date with current technology. The information sex offenders will have to provide on social networks matches the details which are printed in local papers upon conviction.
For that reason, the penalties are equal.?Failure to comply with the law leads to a $1,000 fine and at least two ??but no more than ten ??years of inprisonment (with hard labor). A second violation would bring a?$3,000 fine and at least five ??but no more than twenty ??years of inprisonment (with hard labor).
"It may not be the perfect solution," Thompson acknowledges, but says?he has a responsibility to his constituents. And this is theoretically?more reasonable than attempting to ban some folks from the Internet entirely.
